From the monarchy to the composition of the House of Lords to first past the post to unequal and marginal constituencies etc etc OMG such a long way to go!
Politics should be some kind of calling that only the best qualified can be...
They are disinterested, disenfranchised, possibly unaware ...
In the 2005 general election the no shows (39%) easily outstripped the winner (Blair 35%) and it's been close in the last two elections too.
We could maybe make voting compulsory as in Australia...
In current UK and US "quasi-democracies" the "marginal" seat/state can have a huge over emphasis, which feels quite undemocratic. Many UK "safe seats" never change hands so opposition supporters there have no democratic stake.
I was taken by the skew effect in candidate visits to US states...
