We are led to believe it continued in flight for several hours after losing radio contact. If that is the case then it rules out a fire on board or being shot out of the sky as otherwise I imagine loss of radio would have occurred shortly before it crashed to earth.
I'm not sure your first thought is to send a text when you are potentially looking at death in the face. Blind panic would probably be most people's reaction to a serious incident occurring during a flight

As the mystery of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 continues to baffle all and sundry, reports out today suggest islanders in the Maldives saw a low-flying jet after the airliner's "disappearance".
Even so surely we can presume that some other external means of tracking (Satellite etc ) would still be able to "see" the plane or else what is so special about the Stealth bomber if an engineer can just switch off internal controls to make it invisible
The thing I keep coming back to, unless its been satisfactorily explained on here or elsewhere, is how you can just turn off the tracking devices. The fact that billions has been spent on a Stealth bomber to ensure it cannot be detected seems absurd if someone in the cabin can just flick a few...
The more I read the more I am inclined to think that the level of technical sophistication needed to undertake this disappearance points to someone like a global super power. My guess would be the USA
If we were to assume that the plane continued on its flight path until it ran out of fuel then we would have to assume that the experts were able to narrow down the area that it would have crash landed. I presume that means that a search of that area could be undertaken fairly quickly.

Even in these circumstances surely if the crew reacted then at least one crew member would have been tasked with some sort of mayday call that would have got through
