That would blot his Saints legacy, and he'd have to drive past Southampton every day just to get to work.
Absolutely this.
My reaction is phew. Thanks Adam for doing what De Zerbi should have done. A club like us cannot carry players on hefty wages. Just Milner left to offload.

If you look into the manner of his departure from Saints, you’ll see he has no legacy left there to blot.
it would be like Marc Cucurella signing for Palace.
I am just home from the pub, where AL back to Saints was suggested, and none of the Saints fans present were keen.

I'm a little disappointed, but not surprised, that he thinks he still has any football left in him.
He hasn't.
If there is any truth in the "family reasons" statement, he has a choice of 3 clubs to go to.
All 3 of them are on an upward curve and might be able to afford him, but what would they get from him?
15 minutes in half of their games?
Probably not even that in the Championship.
He would have been wise to have accepted our offer.
A joy to watch, in his pomp.
But that time has passed.

I can’t find any details about the manner of his departure….all the reporting I found is just the basics about the deal and how Saints had to pay Bournemouth some dollar. What happened? I presume he agitated for a departure?

Could he end up at Reading? Only an hour's commute from Southampton, much easier to head up the motorway than deal with the A27.

Did he turn down our deal? Only read he'd decided to move on - what had we offered him, another year on a reduced wage?
Presumably Reading can offer regular first team football for him which we can't. Can't see him at Southampton, Bournemouth or Pompey so that's the next closest club who play at Championship level.

No-one knows what we offered him, but it's been reported as his decision not to stay after talks with the club.
I strongly suspect any offer we would make would be heavily based on his likely appearances next season.
And that would certainly have been a significant drop.
Lallana hasn't left because we can't offer him the minutes he wants.

Reading are in League One and are a total basket case at the moment, 3 straight seasons they’ve had points deductions for FFP payments, late payments to players etc. He’d be mad to go there.
