No - if he was ‘shite’ he’d be playing for a League 1 side not selected by one of the best managers in Europe to play in a EPL side.

You really don‘t know better than RDZ you just think you do. 😜
How long is your list of best managers in Europe? Not even top ten for me.

As soon as I saw him as a starter I knew there would be a pile on.

It's completely obvious that Steele played today, because of City's high press and he has more ability to pass calmly and break the City lines if they overcommit.

OK. It didn't work. But I guess beating City isn't that easy, especially with more players injured than fit and some highly generous reffing.

This isn't on Steele
But he didn't did he ? His insistence on rolling the ball under his foot and enticing the City players onto him caused panic within our back four and the crowd. It lead to the third goal. I agree you cannot blame him for starting with Lallana - which is like starting with only 10 on the pitch.

Do you think, possibly, that is exactly what he was instructed to do by Roberto De Zerbi?

I’m not sure that there’s any other manager in the PL that would play him as first-choice keeper. He spent the rest of his career at Championship level for a reason.
You quoted me so I’ll respond 🙂. - Not sure what you mean ‘spent rest of his career? He plays in a Premier League team now. Roberto played Steele today because Citeh play a high pressing game and Steele is more confident than Verbruggen in playing under pressure - did you not see how tight it was at the back? - Citeh’s forwards were all over us as expected because they know we play out from the back and every pass we made threatened to be intercepted - as I said in a match thread and above - Steele was selected because RDZ thought he was the best choice for our opponent.

Again, as I said in my post on the previous page - Steele couldn’t have been expected to save De Bruyne’s class header into the top right corner; the free kick shouldn’t have been awarded but a very good kick from Foden went in off a deflection so again, the second goal, a tough one to save. Maybe he could have saved the third goal but with Barco caught in possession at the edge of the box, and Foden belting it on target, a tough ask. As for the fourth, I believe Steele could have got down and covered the ball if it weren’t for Walker obstructing him (foul!) - after that it was a tap in by Alvarez but nothing Steele could have done by then. (IMO)

Steele is a consummate professional (as @Bozza says ) - he was our no1 before Bart came along and took a back seat for months, then comes back and plays a fully committed game. I can’t imagine how disappointing that might have been, yet he hasn’t had a Sanchez Strop. Clearly gets on well with Dunky (and great communication between them - I also think Van Hecke communicates better with Steele than Verbruggen too) - the 3 of them work well as a ‘triangle’.

I honestly don’t understand why some folk see attributes in some players but are blind to the attributes in others and then take it out on the players for being selected!

He was in goal for 6 of our 18 wins last season. We probably would have finished higher without him in goal for any games.

You are doing Steele a huge disservice on what he contributed last season.

It was actually 7 wins ( he only started 15 games) they were West Ham (h), Palace (h), Bournemouth (a), Wolves (h), Man Utd (h), Arsenal (a) and Southampton (h).

We got 24 points in those 15 games, a PPG average of 1.6. Sanchez played 23 games and we won 38 points which is an average of 1.65 PPG. Near identical points gained per game by both keepers.

If you extrapolate their records over a full season we’d have 2 more points with Sanchez than Steele, so we probably wouldn’t have finished any higher really.

If we are using stats he’s one of the worst PL keepers this season for shots v goals conceded.

Whataboutery at its finest. What has happened this season doesn't change what he contributed last season, which is what I was commenting on.

The anti Steele lot aren’t Brighton supporters. They’ll have a second club. Muggy bullies on a forum cos we lost so badly.

That was the feeling I had away at Rome. After spending hundreds to be there and drinking the whole day, I suddenly sobered up when I saw the starting line up and it was a horrible feeling.
That none of the goals were his fault ! Tit.

Thinking Verbruggen should be our No 1 does not mean I slag off Steele. I don’t get why Steele starts in all the games against teams that are likely to give us a footballing lesson. Better with his feet, yes, but he is not a better shot stopper and for me that’s the kind of keeper you should be playing when you are likely to face loads of shots.

I am frustrated by RDZ’s refusal to adopt his tactics and trying to play through a team like City is unlikely to ever end well unless we are playing with a mostly fit squad.

Again, as I said in my post on the previous page - Steele couldn’t have been expected to save
And this is the biggest issue with Steele. There’s no expectation that he’ll do any of the goalkeeping stuff, so rather than sticking with the clear upgrade we end up in this vicious cycle of incompetence with him, where half of us say it as it is (which is that he’s not good enough) and half of us defend him with willful ignorance because he’s apparently a nice guy.

My honest reaction talking to friends last night was “we’ve lost this badly” from the moment I saw the team sheet. Part of that was the lack of pace and quality, but a large part is because I’ve no faith in Steele’s ability in goal.

It is what it is.

Couldn’t agree more.

Steele was relatively blameless for the goals.
