To answer your question I would hazard a guess and say no particular reason as roads are man-made and not natural, I would conclude that doormice don’t have the intelligence or the ability to differentiate between a road or any other kind of hard terrain that is in their immediate vicinity.

Ah, but they are intelligent creatures. That's why they spend so much time off the ground as they are vulnerable to predation. These rope ladders will help them negotiate the open spaces caused by the trees that have had to be chopped down. They'll soon be using them.
