One of my heroes. Lethal in the days before covers but completely out of place with a bat. There was outrage when the cowards Thompson & Lillee bowled bouncers at him.

Utterly gutted and quite shocked to hear this.

He did as much away from cricket as he did in cricket. He was still playing when I first started listening on TMS, and still for Kent for a few years after that.

The sort of autograph the starry eyed cricket youngster would cherish and a connection to the good old days. This is really sad news for cricket devotees.

I'm going to use Derek's passing to shamelessly promote the Primary Club, a cricketers charity that provides support to visually impaired sports folk. Derek was a patron and huge supporter of the cause..

Membership is open to anyone who has been out first ball at any level of cricket. So that's all of you cricket folk on here.

On top of the world
Loved him back in the day, a real anti-hero. For a while I tried a right-handed version of his bowling action but barely got it to turn an inch.

A great loss.

As you probably know I've been out to the first ball of the MATCH.

RIP Deadly

Sad news , was lucky enough to see him hit a century at the Central Ground it what I think was his last season in First Class cricket before retiring

Brilliant player and with unerring precision that tied batsmen down until they cracked.

With Alan Knott, in the first England team that I knew about and loved. Knott and Randall were my heroes.

RIP fella and thank you, a national hero.

That was the famous tied match.

He also went straight through the Sussex batting in the JPL match that Sunday. I remember watching it on the box.

That's a shame. As a young kid just getting into cricket and trying to tweak a tennis ball in the back garden you were either Deadly Derek or Ashley Mallet. :)
