Very famous initials (not including the surname).
Most of those runs scored for Warwickshire, did play a match for Sussex and a few tests for England.
Born in Newhaven. Lived 1872 to 1951.
I have looked up the details now, I don't have the guy's date of birth and death knocking around my head. :lolol:

Someone online in my feed said that Lewis Dunk is not international standard.

I would agree that Dunk is a decent defender, although I have always felt that if he was one of the best four in England then the side must be weaker in defence than we would hope. I appreciate that comment needs a tin hat on with some.

But he is international standard purely on the basis that he holds down a place in a top half Premier League team.

International standard is not a step up for me. In all bar a handful of teams it is a step down. Look at Argentina's midfield. Two of our players, not automatic starters, are in there. Brazil's midfield mostly comes from teams around us.

I wonder how many international teams would actually make the top half of the Premier League ?
This.

International football, if you aren't madly nationalistic (The English.... are not) is all bit Harlem Globetrotters. Worse - with real jobs rather than a past career, it is all risk with little but 'glory' to gain. And like a smashing orgasm, perm an orifice or scenario of your choice, a minute later and the glory is forgotten and you're thinking about a nice cup of tea, and paying the bills. Fact.

I was thinking Mike Smith, but wrong era.

But if he only played a few Tests for England I'll need to bail out on it.

I'm a Hawk. I knew that. Although you aren't a proper Hawk until you've had the burger. Which I haven't yet.
Do you have to agree to eat the feathers?

I worked with SCCC (and cricket in general) nuts, since the 1960’s. They rated Alan the greatest Sussex batsman in their time. They’d watched Dexter, Parks, Parker, Mendis, Goodwin, Prior.
I remember when I played for Newhaven under 14s us all being lined up and told how much better Alan and Colin's footwork was compared to ours after we'd been hammered by Lewes Priory or whoever.

I'm not entirely sure what we were supposed to take away from this. :lolol:

As Westander's posted above (having CHEATED apparently :lolol: ) the answer's WG Quaife.
I gather the Quaife's were quite the sporting family in those days:
There's an interesting aside in that article about how in those days, that is the 1880s, the away team were named first as they are now in America, which I didn't realise/had never applied any thought to.

It's not a name I recognise.

Yes, I'm sure some sports have fixtures listed as say, Chelsea @ Brighton.

I'm guessing it's countries that drive on the wrong side of the road.

Back in July 2015 the Albion U-18s won 4-1 against a Shoreham side that contained five Montserratian internationals.

I'm not convinced that their team that won the World Cup would win the Premier League. Far from it.
If you look at the Argentine WC squad the vast majority play for English, Spanish and Italian giants and/or are at the sharp end of a European league . I’m sure you could shape a decent EPL team from that lot.

That photograph’s fantastic. I assume that’s the same location of the football club.

I remember Chapel Street, someone at school lived there.

Most fixtures in International football is a step down v PL football, you can make an argument it's even a step down from Championship football as well

for me international class is being able to hold your own v the other top sides.

To win a World Cup/reformed euros you normally have to beat 2 top teams and the rest are meh, we need the players to beat those 2 teams.

Yes I'm pretty sure the pitch is still in the same place, I think (could be wrong) that the houses on the right in the background are these on Quarry Road.

I mainly remember Chapel Street for the doctors, pharmacy, swimming pool and the fish and chip shop where my auntie once deeply confused them by asking for scraps. Do you remember it before the ring road etc. or do you not go that far back?

Definitely do it in America (and Canada in ice hockey at least), not sure about anywhere else.
By coincidence the other day I was watching some NHL with a friend of mine who's big into that sort of thing and we were talking about this, apparently while they claim the teams are written in "Team X at Team Y" format, that's just been made up later to justify putting the teams that way around after people from other countries started questioning it. They've just always written them that way around for no particular reason.

By coincidence (and it wasn't even my town) I was looking at old Newhaven pictures at the weekend, Chapel Street with houses etc went all the way to the Ouse bridge, so just yards from Bridge Street.

I was very young but yes I can remember the High Street and Bridge Street being the A259, the ring road didn't exist. For a small town it was okay economically with a Woolworths etc. The ring road ripped the heart out. By layman's better idea would've been the entire A259 following the northern part of the new ring road only.

Regarding that first sports pitch photo, I assume that the downland hills behind became Gibbon Road?

I think Gibbon Road would be just below where the trees are in the background. If the match was played in 1890, it was a year before the pub at the bottom of Gibbon Road was built.
I'd hazard a guess that the faint shadow of some houses that are just visible in the distant background are where the lifeboat cottages are on Fort Road.

The Sheffield.

Some great lunchtimes pissed in there, once with teachers at the end of term.

I remember Newhaven before the ring-road. The traffic used to plough straigh through the town centre back then.

Chapel Street is the residential street which went between South Road and the river, turn off is where the Morocco Cafe used to be. Was there a chip shop on this street or do you mean the one on South Road.

Lets face it lots of players can get a cap or two where they are given a go. Doesn't mean they are international standard any more than a player who gets ten Premier League appearances and no more.

I'd say if you start for your country 15+ times you are international standard. Anything less and you're not quite there.

The section under the ring road onto Bridge Street is also Chapel Street, it's called Horace's (I've only been in there a couple of times, my mum used to get ours from Denton for some reason).

I broadly agree, but for some players (and Dunk may well turn out to be an example) they might be perfectly good enough to play well over 15+ internationals but happen to be blocked by other players in the same position who are either better or are preferred by the manager for any number of reasons.

At club level you just get sold and play somewhere else, at international level you have to lump it (or in some cases play for another country you happen to qualify for).
