I can see why you say that, but I think it was setting things up in the story for the next series. Unfortunately though sometimes series are better in retrospect, when you watch 2 or 3 series consecutively because you get to see were its headed quickly. The problem this series has, is that being on Netflix, they might not have the luxury of setting the scene because Netflix have a tendency to give things the boot pretty quickly.

The series reportedly cost $20million per episode to make. Wonder what they spent the money on? Certainly can't have been on script writers or actors!
There's a Chinese version from last year available on Amazon Prime that is supposed to be much closer to the books. Think I'll give that one a spin. Mind you there's 30 episodes so I may be some time...

'I have watched almost the entire run, and already read all three books.
30 episodes, covering only the first book. Unlike a lot of book to show translations in US like Wheel of Time, Game of Thrones, etc, the show is literally every scene from the book recreated, often with the same exact dialogue. It is super long and super detailed, and like you would expect if you have read the book series, an amazing long and winding leadup to the actual reveal of the plot.
The only thing missing is what I can only assume is Chinese gvmt censorship of the early scenes of the intellectual purge during the peoples revolution, but there is quite a bit still there around the political environment of the time.'
Somebody else commented that they'd read the books quicker than they'd watched the show

Up to Episode 3 and it is very addictive. It's good to watch a series with a relatively unknown cast, I only recognised Thomas Brodie Sangster.

Really not sure on this one. The film is such an all-time classic that I don’t know why they didn’t leave that book alone and adapt another of Highsmith’s works instead, or just make a Ripley series with a generic ‘Ripley’ script. Also not convinced Scott is the actor for that role.

Fair point, although I think Scott is great ( I recently saw him excel in Vanya ) and I'll approach it with an open mind.
Also looking forward to seeing Flynn, who was fantastic in the Burton/Gielgud play too.

The Old Oak. Fairly typical Ken Loach film about Syrian refugees being dumped on a downtrodden northern town and the issues it creates.

This is my most eagerly awaited show ever. The books (particularly The Talented…) are superb and yes, the Matt Damon movie was great but if I’m being offered an 8-parter by Netflix, I’ll greedily take it. Such a brilliant piece of storytelling by Highsmith.
The Guardian thinks Scott is a winner:

Watched first episode of Ripley. Was very impressed.
I have been anticipating this for a while and was not disappointed.
