Looks a good sized and established, very jealous!
Is it a Bloodgood or Atropurpureum??
Having done some research (google images) it looks like a Bloodgood. Slightly thinner leaves.
It is 20 plus years old. I have seen similar, half the size, on sale in garden centres for £500 plus.
It was a present from my little mad bro (who is a gardener, like our grand dad on mum's side. Mr Diggins of Hove no less!).
If the seedling takes I'll be very happy

The large specimens go for crazy money, I guess you're paying for the time it takes to get them to that size. There's a specialists Acer nursery near us and they have huge and beautiful acers for well over a 1k
I'm sure you'll get the seedling to adulthood but I think I read somewhere that the seedlings often revert back to regular palmatum that's why almost all the acers you buy are grafted to guarantee the variety is true.

With the help of @jevs we got to Acer palmatum dissectum but it was a bargain buy in the winter at a garden centre with no label and no leaf about 15 years ago, at about 3ft tall. Grew it in a pot for 5 years, planted out about 10 years ago, now about 8ft.

It's quite upright but could be one of a few dissectums. Whatever it is it's incredible and would cost you a fortune to buy, very jealous.

Never in the field of leafless winter bargains, have so many, given so much, for so few. Sadly with my gardening abilities, it's a numbers game
Just bought a new (very old) house in Dorset. Moving in in April. Small town garden with good bones but very little stock of worth. North and South facing walls. Very overlooked. Will happily share the renovation journey on here.
