Nice bit of PR from team Southgate. What’s our vote on “there's a millions people that think I should be”

Maguire continues to be selected for his country despite struggling to nail down a regular starting place in Manchester United's team this season.

"I think I've been in every single squad I've been available for, I've played every competitive game that I've been available for," said the defender.

"It gives me great confidence."

Maguire, who was given his England debut by Southgate in 2017, added: "There's loads of people out there now who probably don't think I should be in the squad.

"There's millions of people that think I should be.

"That's football and that's why it's such a great game because everyone has such a different opinion."

He always seems to do okay for England.

He has improved a lot lately and as @Eeyore above states, he’s done alright for England overall. Despite this I’ve still said no because there are much better centre backs than him available.

We’ve been picking based on reputation for decades. I remember when Tom Cleverley was getting selected simply because he cost a bit of money and was on Manchester United’s bench. The second he moved to a less fashionable club and actually played every game, he was dropped from the England squad.

If Maguire was turning out the same level of performance as he is currently at, say, Sheffield United, he would be dropped.

Poor reading of the game. And so slow in the turn.

In WC22, he was beaten to the ball for the headed winning goal in the 6 yard box by a 36 year old Giroud.

Vastly overpriced domestically and with 62 England caps, conclusive proof of Southgate's misplaced loyalty.

Yes, he's played better recently, but he wasn't really playing at all before then. He almost left United last summer.

It's been 'no' since the last Euros.

He is playing better now than he was when GS insisted on picking him.

I'm not going to fight it any more.

Most England games are against weaker teams than he faces at club level.
Which gives him the " Never let's England down" argument that perpetuates his inclusion.

If Lewis had been given a decent run at it, Maguire would have been jettisoned a long time ago.

This being reported quite widely (originally Henry Winter in Times), that Maguire wants Southgate to stay until WC 2026.

That's hardly surprising when any other manager would've dropped a few times for errors and loss of form.

Why want to change a manager who always picks you inspite of form?

You only have to order the defenders in fantasy football by form and scroll past all the solid English defenders to get to maguire to realise he shouldn’t be first choice.

12 months ago, no. But he has crept back into the United squad and, if we’re honest, it’s not a position where we’re blessed with options.

Squad, yes. Team, no.

Wow, over a 1/4 of NSC voting yes.

What are you seeing when you watch him play? I may need to book myself into the opticians. All I'm seeing is; lack of pace, mistakes, slow distribution, poor decision making, club appearances only because all other options are injured...I suppose he can head it and that's enough for Gareth and others...
