Having patronisingly experienced Manchester and then going up to London to work, London and the whole Britpop nonsense was completely fake.
In my opinion Manchester was the last authentic "scene" and everything else has been manufactured.

Out out 6 nights a week. The pubs were packed, smoking was allowed, you were allowed to get drunk in a pub and there was no mobile camera phones.

I recommend giving a lot of time to the A Northern Soul Album. Tis excellent, as is A Storm in Heaven - The Sun, The Sea especially.
Allow this to seamlessly lead you into Shoegaze which was an excellent scene killed before its time by the cardigan wearing scruffs of grunge. IMHO of course.
Start with Nowhere and Going Blank Again by Ride and end with Loveless by My Bloody Valentine.

Definitely carried on into the early nineties, I would say Madchester was bigger in the early nineties

I love to catch up with at some point and talk about the random occurrence that ended me up spending a day in John Peel's house in the 1990s.
- The bin bags of cassettes tapes that arrived in his post.
- The multiple copies of the same LP he never had time to listen to.
- The depression the above caused him.
- The Live Aid back stage pass randomly sitting on a shelf.
- The Noel Edmonds story.
- The offer of a caravanning holiday in North Wales from my colleague that he politely declined.
- Why I ended up there in the first place, driving overnight through a snow storm from Manchester because of those (his words) ##### at the ####.
