You should be able to expect that such things won't happen in a civilised society.
This particular issue does seem to be a Rome (AS Roma/Lazio) thing and has been for many years with the authorities seemingly not bothered to do anything about it.
I hadn't appreciated it was something unique to the Roman clubs. If so, next time it happens they should be thrown out of European competition for 5 years. Throwing stuff at people in the stadium is one thing, but you can't let this sort of disgusting violence continue to go unnoticed. It's shameful.

I agree that should happen but both clubs would argue that incidents happen away from the ground and usually not on match days - even though here is an undoubted link.
I suppose that is a fair comment. It's not those clubs' fault. Perhaps they should be made to play behind closed doors for 5 years if it happens again then.
Or be made to play “home” European matches outside of Rome/Italy
It's a difficult one. If a Roma (or any away fan) was attached before a match in Brighton, NSC would be in uproar if the club were sanctioned for it unless there was clear evidence that there was a link to the club.
However, this happens so regularly, it should be possible for UEFA to say that Rome is too dangerous for away fans and therefore both Rome clubs have to pay European games in Milan. The alternative is that away fans are banned from the matches (home and away) but this also isn't fair.
It is obviously a football problem as I haven't heard of any rugby fans being stabbed during the 6 Nations, although I don't follow rugby so it's possible I have missed this.

I was watching ‘the world at war’ documentary over the weekend (the best documentary ever in my opinion) and the Italians have a sad history of cowardice. It must be in their dna.

Good article, the more I think about it, the more likely it is to be football related, I was in a perfect position to be Robbed yet they took nothing, except one of my shoes. I have a good friend who is a Middlesbrough fan who was attacked in similar style albeit he was only 10 and with his dad, which is shocking really. I think however the ultras that go around stabbing really have very little to do with the football and just use it as an excuse. The next team that goes there will be interesting to see what happens.

Yeah they were leaving a pub called the drunken ship, one of his dads friends was stabbed, lots of women and children in that pub.
I have a friend who was a season ticket holder at Roma for a couple of seasons. Text him a week or so before the game for Carbonara recommendations (and boy did he come through) but he also said be super cautious. Younger factions of the Ultras see English fans as an opportunity to make a name for themselves and look for opportunities - so less of an initiation and more a chance to stand out.
As you say Jack, regardless, it's a shocking excuse for violence, and it's such a shame it happened in what should've been a lovely time in Rome.
Yes, I think it's football related in the sense that most of the Rome gangs are probably intertwined with the football support - probably a huge overlap, so really tribal, encompassing gangs that are often part of the 'fan' base.
