If he did what he did in Marseille in a pub or a town centre in the UK he'd have potentially got a custodial sentence.

3 years seems extremely lenient, frankly I don't want him anywhere near a Brighton game ever again.

Imagine the club were waiting for the outcome so they didn’t prejudice any proceedings (and maybe hoped the court would do the job for them). Wouldn’t be surprised to see a club statement and some further action now…..………….a very, very lengthy if not a lifetime ban from BHA games would not be unreasonable imo.

Fisticuffs near the entrance to the MWB lounge towards the end of the game last night, right in front of the stewards (who managed to get the situation under control quickly, but not before a nasty little melee ensued). Play stupid games, win a banning order.

Unless the Frech law has changed, the maximum football ban you can be sentenced is three years in France.
So no, the sentence is not extremely lenient. He could have been sentenced to jail or probatory jail but that would have been on the harsh side.

Totally agree Harty.
I was a couple of rows behind the violent incident and never wish to see that happen again in a Brighton away end ever again.
At the end of the day, it should have been a charge of GBH, as the fan who was on the recieving end did to start or aggreviate the situation.

I was half cut in Marseille, most of our fans probably were, I'm sure 99.9% would never consider hitting a fellow Albion fan.

There's no excuse ever.

A 3 or 6 months probatory jail would have been possible and in lines of what he would have get if he were a French citizen. On the other hand French justice system is pretty much saturated (especially in Marseille with the recent bursts of drug affairs) and tend to punish more violence in stadiums with football stadium bans than probatory jail. A real jail sentance would not be in line with French habits for a first time offender.

One Amex match last season I was carrying my bike over the railway bridge at Falmer post-match, very busy, and the front wheel of my bike must have bumped the calf of a 40-something bloke in front who turned round and threatened violence if it happened again, I apologised, next thing I know he turned round and punched me in the face, his mate, similar age, grinning about it like a goon. Nothing I could do about it, fortunately it wasn’t a hard punch. Both Albion fans. Some nice people out there.

After the game in Rome, I was on the bottom step of the steps that led down from the stand while we waited to leave. We were close to the big queue for the toilets. One chap moving along in the queue gently bumped against a big bearded chap stood next to me who absolutely flipped. The guy in the queue immediately apologised for the little bump. Bearded chap got right in his face with constant use of the 'c' word and threatening to flatten him if he touched him again. He was on the lookout for any opportunity to abuse other fans.

Contrast that with another chap who slipped on the steps going feet first into the back of my leg - just like a two footed studs up challenge. I helped pick the chap up and check he was OK. Goodness knows what would have happened to him had he slid into bearded bloke.

Wonder if it was the tosser at Lewes station last night. There was a fair number of people on the platform waiting, he comes down the stairs, bellows out 'Seagulls' to no reaction whatsover so proceeds to rant at everyone about how sh*t they are, how flat the atmosphere is going to be etc etc....didn't stop the abuse for quite a while, directed at no-one in particular.

I do not think the club 'hoped the court would do the job for them', they usually/always wait until all criminal procedings have completed before they announce their own ban etc.

Similar experience at Roma stadium, you know how little space there was particularly with so many people standing at the top of the gangway so I gently placed my hand on the side of some lad to ease myself through a small gap to get back to my seat, he moved to let me though -- but after I was through and about 5 metres away I heard him say something like if that bloke does it again I'm going to smack him. What can you do, but just laugh? A fair proportion of people are just very angry souls a lot of the time for zero reason, you just stay out of their way as much as you can.

Sadly the drink didn't help probably. The notion of alcohol ever coming back to English football stadium seats (it really, all things being equal, should) will never be helped by the kind of things that English fans get up to in European stadiums that allow it

That's what I did. I was speaking with a couple of friends while this was going on but this guy was just mental and so I removed myself from the situation and stood elsewhere until we were allowed out.

Find it really bizarre when I see momentary flare ups in the concourse over "bumps" like described above. We're all packed in like sardines, milling around. It's inevitable that there will be the odd bump.
