There is actually no such thing as pressing charges in UK law. You either support a prosecution (essentially by being a witness in court and talking to the police during the investigation) or not. Cases often proceed without an alleged victim supporting prosecution. The police gather the evidence that a crime has been committed, and the CPS decide whether to proceed based on the evidence provided.

In this case, if he is prosecuted, Abbott wouldn’t need to do anything.
Half the dimwits that already give her a load of abuse won't realise she hasn't supported the prosecution and will give her more abuse anyway. You could say that's what happens with domestic abuse victims, police involvement can make it worse, especially if they go ahead without the support of the witness. The victim not supporting the prosecution generally indicates they're fearing reprisal greater than what they've already received. :(

Correct.

It’s 50/50 whether the police would pursue a prosecution on this without her support.

Arguably it’s inciting racial hatred and could be a stand alone prosecution.

I doubt it though .

I'm wondering if this is classed as racial harassment then it would be out of time. If the police said the phrase 'she should be shot' counted as racial incitement, then there isn't a statute of limitations.

Been listening with interest today, I never thought the country could come to this. What Hester allegedly said is racist and misogynistic in the extreme and there is no excuse. Our first Minority Prime Minister should be calling this out as such and acting but sadly, he's spineless and there is the matter of that odd £10m to consider too. They can't say Hester Is/ was Racist and keep the cash.

As for the government minister trying to say that what was said was neither racist or sexist is a new low and we have had plenty of new lows from this government in the last 5 years. The words spoken, if true, cannot be smoothed over and categorised " We put it behind us and move on. "

If this is allowed to stand without serious Government action then we can comfortably say that we are now a racist country and our government is complicit.

Kemi Badenoch, Minister for Equality, a black woman, has been noticeable by her silence.

The press caused more fuss over Ms Abbott drinking a mojita on a train, than this.
Good spot but she has now come out and confirmed the language was racist.

But obviously as a Tory, money is more important than racism and sexism so they are keeping the £10m. It’s time for forgiveness:

“Ms Badenoch welcomed his apology and called for "space for forgiveness".

“The Conservative Party - funded by racists” needs to be a prominent election slogan!

Please an election. They surely can’t expect us to swallow yet another unelected leader. Can they?

I suspect Sir Graham wanted assurance that the £10m wouldn’t be handed back and that the racist would be forgiven. Looks like he got what he wanted:

“Downing Street initially declined to describe his comments as racist.
But later Mr Sunak's spokesperson said: "The comments allegedly made by Frank Hester were racist and wrong.
"He has now rightly apologised for the offence caused and where remorse is shown it should be accepted.

I think if Sunak thinks there’s a serious chance he’ll be unseated (and a VONC doesn’t necessarily mean he’d lose, I suspect he wouldn’t) as leader he’ll be up the palace faster than you can blink. He’s only interested in saving his own skin at this stage.

Civil servants have threatened ministers with legal action over concerns that senior Home Office staff could be in breach of international law if they implement the government’s Rwanda deportation bill.

The FDA union, which represents senior civil servants, have warned they could also be in violation of the civil service code – and open to possible prosecution – if they followed a minister’s demands to ignore an urgent injunction from Strasbourg banning a deportation.

The FDA has sent a pre-action legal letter to James Cleverly, the home secretary, calling for clarity – with a request to either amend the legislation or change the code.

Unless I haven't kept up, that looks like exactly what they are going to do.

Which is nice.

I don’t want Hester to get his money back. They should give it to a charity of Diane Abbott’s choosing.

This could be a tipping point.

Rwanda has always partly been about demonstrating to the gammon that 'we' will not be dictated to by the EU.

Even if we have to go rogue to do so. Aligning ourselves as international pariahs alongside Iran and North Korea.

Top work, tosspots. Let's see if they have the bottle. And stupidity. My money says the have.

Yes. My 'which is nice' was channeling the Fast Show. Second time tonight

That said, what charity wants money from a racist? Especially after the tory party feels it can't take money from a racist. Any more. Today.
