We can score. We can score a LOT under De Zerbi. The bit I'm struggling with is the clean sheet.

When we're on song 4 goals is very possible, to get a clean sheet we have to play like yesterday.

It ain't possible

It is possible and more likely than any of us winning the lottery this week. I have tickets and similar levels of expectation for both things.

I've always remembered jimmy Conners coming back in a game at Wimbledon
admittedly I had to look it up for precisness

1987 playing a swede named Pernfors
losing 1-6,1-6,1-4 with the light fading and nursing an injury,he came back and won the match

out of that golden era, I enjoyed watching Conners the most

LOL I was told to fcuk off in not so many words by several posters on the match thread for saying we should field our best available team on Thursday and play to win. I had the piss taken out of me for saying everyone should turn up on Thursday and give our team support.

After Roma - I started a thread specifically as a positive response to all the negativity on NSC recently supporting what the Club is doing and where we are etc.

I maybe many things but killjoy isn’t one of them 👍

But 5:0 - yep chances ‘slim to Karen Carpenter’ and pigs might fly.
Lighten up a bit? Your words didn't irk me particularly but the flying pig graphic did a bit. Not sure why TBH. It's best to try to be positive in these situations, which is very much in the spirit of the thread title and topic. Would I put money on a Brighton comeback? No. But let me dream. I’ve been saying all season that Fati owes us at least one legendary performance before he departs. Come on Ansu, your time has come…

Balls out of the bath on this one. We have the ability, IF we turn up with intensity from the first whistle, to win the match on the night. I just don’t see us getting 4 unanswered goals in a month of Sundays to level the tie.

We had a good run but they’re a level above us. Maybe last season with MacAllister, Caicedo, Mitoma, March and an in-form Dunk and Ferguson we could’ve had a chance. But we are considerably weaker due to player sales, injuries and form.

I’ll be proud of the lads if we give it a go from kick off.

Will be fascinating to see how we approach the tie on Thursday.

Do we adopt some level of pragmatism, play for pride and try to make the aggregate score respectable?

Or do we go for it, pile forward and risk getting battered again? (Assuming Roma see any need to cross the halfway line)?

Part of me thinks we may as well go for it, but being on the wrong end of a 6-0 or 7-1 aggregate score would be painful.

I like the idea of improving the overall aggregate but I think we all know the De Zerbi way isn’t to pull any punches and the response is always attack more when we are down, not less. Not to go for it would be a different game to one we usually play.

We have known that since the day RDZ arrived, he plays a high risk system but one IMO that works for us if we score at the other end - it has been mostly our poor finishing in recent League matches that has really skewed the GD. I think we could have absorbed mistakes in the defence if we had been more clinical in our shooting imo. Looking back this season, we have lost games not because we let so many goals in, or by letting the oppo score early necessarily, but by consistently failing to convert chances that we created even when the oppo scored early and parked the bus or simply flaffing around in the final 3rd instead of being more aggressive.

If we ‘don’t go for it’, we could find ourselves at the end of a dubbing/at least a dissatisfied match anyway with Roma - not sure we could absorb 90 minutes of being battered by De Rossi’s aggressive attacking style and it will make for a really depressing game.

So I say let’s play De Zerbi ball, focus on being more clinical in front of goal because we have repeatedly beaten bigger clubs than us when we have done that well - if we are going to consolidate our crashing out of the Europa, let it be by playing well not badly and by being true to our DNA. 🙂.

(And please let’s have Ferguson on the score sheet whatever happens because what an amazing and memorable ‘comeback’ form that would be for him)

Of course we can't - it's literally impossible.

But score one in the first 10 minutes or so, and another before halftime and the impossible could become possible.

My thoughts too. 2-0 at HT and who knows. If we are up at HT, it's still unlikely that we’d do it but it will at least raise the temperature for the second half. Even if the score stays at that, it will send us home with smiles on our faces as expectations had been so low to start with.

Brighton factually.....
two goals in the first half and a red card to a Roma player and I will start to watch the game through my fingers, other than that I will popping along on Thursday to show my appreciation for the boys

Hmmm, not sure about this. We have a 0.3% better chance than Roma of winning the competition 😂

If this thread is any kind of guide to how Thursday will go then I fear we are in for a long night.

Extremely faint hints of optimism quickly drowned in a binfest of people shouting at each other about exactly how unlikely beating Roma by 4 goals is.

Complete shambles all round.

How about Spurs v Man Utd in 2002 - Spurs race to a 3 - 0 lead at half time, only for Utd to score 5 in the second half!

If Roma were having an off day, and we were having a good one and played at a level I k ow we can, we could maybe pull off a win but 5:0 is too much of a stretch for me

Do you have a link/date for that please?

Betting forecast has us on beating Roma 2-1 on Thursday which seems quite a reasonable prediction and would be a respectable result
