Most successful, probably Ajax?

Appreciate there are other teams in Amsterdam, but I don't think Ajax have played any of them for some years ?

But who would be considered the biggest,PSG,Napoli and of course Leeds United 😆

Unfortunately Sheffield Wednesday cannot be considered

Bayern Munich?
I know they're shit now but there was a time in living memory when 1860 were serious rivals. Potential is still big if they ever get their act together.

As the name suggests Bayern were more the team of the region of Bavaria whilst 1860 were well supported in the city of Munich.

I'll add Marseille to the original list.

Yes, I’ve seen 1860 at Dortmund in the Bundesliga, their decline has been relatively recent.

Apart from those mentioned elsewhere could probably include Newcastle too. At a push Porto.

Difficult question. Most cities over a certain size will have multiple teams, even the Vatican City has 2 teams. So the biggest one-team city will actually be quite a small city I guess.

This does not answer the question but Málaga, with a city population of over half a million, are knocking about in the regionalised 3rd tier of Spanish football. Impressively, they're still getting crowds of over 20,000 in a league where some teams don't get 1000 through the gate.

Hate to say it but Leeds must be one of the biggest one club city teams in Europe. The metropolitan Borough is over 800k and the city proper over 500k.

That said I'd argue they have actually underachived support wise. they've never averaged over 40k in a season despite more than 50 years of top flight football and 3 titles

If we are going on technicalities, Manchester City are the no one club in the world - I think the next closest in the pyramid are FC United of Manchester who are in the Northern Premier (who we beat 4-0 in the cup on an extremely cold evening).
there is another club who bear Manchester’s name but they are in Trafford and most of their supporters live south of Watford
