[Misc] Should cars be taxed on weight as well as emissions?

and cost? Cars costing 40k new have a 5 year penalty of £390 per annum on top of the normal road tax cost.


Given the state of the roads around here it can only do more harm to have big F Off Suvs and EVs with their lardy bodies thundering/crawling up and down them. The heavier the car the more tax it should be paying imo :smile:

Not forgetting that there is talk of multi storey car parks potentially collapsing once EVs outnumber ICE cars due to their lardiness

Thoughts?

Guess who doesn’t own an SUV or an EV :lolol:

Size rather than weight. Our roads are not designed for pick up trucks and those huge SUV, range rover types. This means that they end up forcing other cars off the road in rural areas, blocking pavements as parking on the road would block the road etc. I can understand farmers using them but no-one else needs them.

Compromise then, tax on size and weight so the big SUVs would get a double whammy!

I am always surprised that airlines charge extra for overweight luggage but not for people 20kg overweight. Surely Ryanair have thought about it?

I've been using the 'cycle lane' adjacent to the A27 between Lewes and Falmer for at least 25 years. I'm not aware there has been any upkeep of it in this time, it's now breaking up via tree roots and is often littered with broken glass and smashed wing mirrors, kindly provided by other road users. For long stretches there is no barrier and when travelling westbound, cyclists are faced with 2 lanes of up to 80mph+ traffic, often with full beam headlights shining directly in their faces.

And yet, every cyclist eg travelling to a match is one less fighting to get on the buses or trains, so everyone else travelling benefits. That externality benefit is the justification for spending on better cycle lanes.

The state of our roads is due to 16 years of a lazy and tight fisted approach to maintenance. Freeze-thaw action and bugger all done about it. Popping a bit of luke warm tarmac in, is a recipe for it reopening up next winter.

Regarding types of vehicle, the evidence I read was HGV’s causing the damage. It was something like one laden HGV journey causes the damage of 1,000’s of car journeys.

….and they don’t even use them! Whilst we’re at it, teachers get too many holidays.

Imagine having a set of scales for people beside check in/bag drop and surcharging people over a certain weight, mayhem and fights guaranteed

This. Also, there’s a budget deficit and always will be whilst Amazon etc contribute nothing. Which is supremely ironic given their tens of thousands of heavy vans and lorries are tearing everything up, from country lanes to motorways to pieces doing daily drops.
