One of my contacts in Milan has advised me that the Freccia Rosa trains between Roma Termini and Milano Centrale should be running OK on Friday. He therefore thinks that I shouldn’t have a problem getting from Rome to Milan, but getting from Milan to Malpensa Airport will be more difficult, with no buses or local trains running.

At the moment, I’m thinking as long as I can get to central Milan with plenty of time before my flight’s due to depart, at worse I can get a cab (albeit I expect these to be at a premium and consequently quite pricey).

If there aren’t any trains at all from Rome to Milan, then I’ll have to hire a car.

Luckily, my flight from Malpensa doesn’t depart until 10.40pm, so I should have time to sort something out, although I may not get the sightseeing time in Rome that I had hoped for.
This is the big issue for me. I’ve booked a flight home from Rome via Edinburgh now.

Following is posted by an Italian on TripAdvisor which refers specifically to trains to Pisa but might also help generally……

+++

Difficult to say about the trains. Usually Regional trains are cancelled except specified guaranteed trains, but there appear to be no guaranteed Regional trains between Rome and Pisa, only a few trains at either end of the line running to and from Grosseto in the middle of the line.

The fast Frecce trains usually run and some Intercities run, though only guaranteed trains are guaranteed.

The following are guaranteed trains from Roma Termini to Pisa Centrale: 09.57 Intercity, 13.57 Frecciabianca but do not expect seat reservations to be honoured on these trains! They could be a mad scrum.

The last assured train the previous evening departs 20.23 as the 21.48 is via Florence and the connecting train from Florence to Pisa is after midnight so is unlikely to run.

++

Just for info….

Did they say if that’s just the Rome to Milan route they’ll run a service for? We’re booked with Frecciarossa but to Verona.
I've tried to work my way through the "guaranteed train list" but not finding anything to get us to Verona on the Friday.

It can all change over there as it frequently does before actual strike days,but better to have a plan b,even after assurances from contacts

I am getting a Frecciarossa train from Rome to Milan on Friday just before 8am, which sounds like it will run. Can your contact advise if the Airport Transfer / Shuttle buses will be running between Milan Centrale & Bergamo Airport? If not, is the only other option a Taxi? Presumably if there are no buses running getting to any Italian Airport is going to be difficult?

He doesn’t know whether buses will be running to the airports. My plan is to give myself plenty of time when I get to Milano Centrale, so that I can get a cab if need be (accepting that it will probably cost a fortune)

For what it’s worth, Flixbus (one of the Airport Transfer bus companies) has confirmed that at this stage they will still be running their service.

Further information - I have contacted Terravision (great name for a bus company) who run a shuttle bus service between the centre of Milan and Malpensa airport. They’ve confirmed that they will be unaffected by the public transport strikes on 8 March.

Great thanks. Very useful. I’ve found the 510 intercity that we are ironically booked on already (to Pisa) is listed as safe. Weirdly it says it’s calling at a different time in Rome (9:32 rather than 9:57 which our booking says) but it gets to Pisa at the same time so I assume must be the same one…
My booking - which according to an Italian on TripAdvisor says is 'guaranteed' says 09.57 - not 09.32......think I might get to the station in time for the earlier one....somewhat confusing

The only reason i was confused is because the specific Rome pick up time is different on this link; http://www.viaggiatreno.it/vt_pax_i...odLocOrig=S09818&tipoRicerca=stazione&lang=IT

I wouldn’t worry though. The start and end destination is as listed for our train and the call time at Pisa is the same so I’m sure it’s the same train. Think we’re good.
