The commentary I listened to said VAR confirmed it was a red. I’m not sure what this actually means but this is what was said

It means that the VAR ref didn't think the on-field ref had made a clear and obvious error.

I'd absolutely be screaming for it if it was the other way around.
Doesn't change the fact it's a yellow card.

But he's also gone in more side footed than anything you see given a red these days.
If it was studs first then sure, red card.
But he's basically tried to play a pass and side footed him, never a red.

Point of contact was in a grey area. What is now a sore grey area. I think a yellow, just.
I wasn’t aware they confirmed on-field decisions though i.e. I thought they only piped up/intervened when they needed to.
As an aside Gilmour was frustrating when he was on the pitch, often just tapped the ball back to Dunk or JPVH which he did a lot of at the start of the season.

This. I’m actually amazed some are saying it wasn’t, I wasn’t expecting that at all even though some fans will always see things through blue and white specs.
He doesn’t mean to hurt him but that doesn’t make any difference at all, it is a bit of a shocker and a stonewall red.

Based on the current guidance it's a red all day long. However, by the same token Maguire should have gone too.

Just as an aside the geek in me likes seeing all the "stonewall". We all know what it means but it doesn't really make sense in the context of "a certain decision". Though it's become accepted to mean this it seems to be credited in some places to an angry Alex Ferguson getting his words mixed up and meaning to say an act of obstruction was "stone-cold certain" and coming out instead with "stonewall" (which of course means hindering/obstructive behaviour). Funny that it got copied rather than ignored or mocked and has just become part of how fans and commentators talk now.
