What also doesn’t sit right is Holgate was only given a yellow before VAR intervened.
Gilmour got a straight red 😡
The ref was unsighted on Holgates offending leg.
TBH I'm surprised he gave anything.

Watched it in the concourse after and it didn’t look a red at all. In the highlights shown in the ground he’s on his feet, in control and competing for the ball. The follow through doesn’t look in any way intentional. It didn’t look to me like serious foul play (see law definition below).

On that tweet it’s a stonewall red. I voted yellow on the poll before I played the tweet video. I’m minded to upgrade. He does, I suppose, endanger the opponent, though not with malice or a lunge.

But there are a lot of angles where it’s yellow at most.

Consistency is once again the issue. Plenty of other refs don’t give a red for the same challenge. And Tarkowski should have had 2 yellows before that which would have changed the course of the game such that Gilmour’s challenge doesn’t happen.

I don't think Gilmour 'lunged' particularly. Whereas Maguire definitely did.

He didn’t lunge at all but it does look from the angle Bozza showed that he endangered his opponent which is an “or” clause in the law.

extremely unfortunate as in the modern game these 'follow throughs' happen but in laws game yep a red

It wasn’t like last weeks I would like to add but he went through and dems the rules
Yes he left his foot in which is not good. Deserves his punishment

I really don’t think VAR would intervene and overturn a yellow there. At the same time, there was too much in the tackle for VAR to interfere.
I agree, it’s one of those that’s border line (I’ve seen angles where it looks a red and angles where it doesn’t) I think whatever is given on the pitch VAR would back.

No intention to harm, but a bit reckless. No good showing it in slow motion as every foul looks horrendous at that speed. Probably a red but a different ref may have given a yellow.

A red is not incorrect IMO, and VAR didn't intervene, would have been interesting if ref gave a yellow to start with.

Maguire one looks as bad, if not worse.

i didn’t think it was even a foul at the time, certainly not a red. But then I watched RDZ as BG walked off, didn’t look at him or move to console him. So I accept that he presumably thought it was a red.

Yellow for me . . . Its an accident and unintentional .
As I have said many times before, this is irrelevant. Intent has nothing to do with the laws.

It is a red, but it's also the kind of challenge we've seen players get away with numerous times this season. If the ref didn't give it on the field, I'm not totally convinced VAR would have intervened. Doucoure's theatrics (and no doubt Dyche's screeching) certainly influenced the refs decision.
