Never thought I would be happy to hear that a 33 year old Danny Welbeck has signed for another year, in the year of our Lord 2024, but its fair to say he has been fantastic and beaten all my expectations when we orginally signed him.

He's waited until Naylor has said that we are in negoiations with Danny over a new deal, so when the deal is announced he can use this post to make it look like he's ITK and beaten everyone to the scoop.

Is this the same Mr Lion fella that drives around in the Bentley?

PS great news about Danny if true, he is a fantastic team player and great ambassador for the club and role model for the younglings!!

He might not be prolific (not many strikers are) but offers more than just goals.

Really a quality player, you can see why he played at the top level for so long. He rarely has a game where he doesn't contribute something important.

Older player, playing regularly and not looking out of place, costs us nothing in a position we don't have much depth and very little experience? Next this Lion fella will be saying bears are likely to deficate outdoors and to watch this space for confirmation!

Agree - seems a genuinely nice guy as well....so important to have players like him around a young squad.

I get the impression with Welbz that out of all our squad, he’d be the hardest for a baddie to bait into a fight. At the same time, once he’d engaged, he’d finish the baddie the quickest.

I certainly hope Danny stays for at least another year.

Our other strikers are very inexperienced and need to be taken out of the firing line occasionally. Danny is the perfect player to be swapping in with them.

I think said Mr Lion owns multiple Bentleys in different colours. The Bentley-driver and twitterer deserve one another.

Welbeck is class and always has been. The most under rated English player of recent years. I was so happy when we signed him and I’m delighted how it’s gone.

Desperately hope he does stay at least another year, we need him.

Slightly OT but reading Naylor’s article in the Athletic today about Lallana, I would expect us to make another Welbeck/Milner/Lallana type signing this summer too.

Having looked into this, I gather the winner of such a contest would depend on whether the fight took place on land or in open ocean.

This is the most significant statistic - more goals for us than in his time at arsenal and man utd. He has far exceeded my expectations when we signed him and shows how well he and the club have maintained his fitness and physical condition.
