But it was you who mentioned Hitler and the Nazis in your post #205.

You yourself fulfilled Godwin's law and are trying to use it against someone, to whom it does not apply.
The law states "the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1."
The post to which I responded referenced WWII and Jewish refugees fleeing to the UK. Hence fulfilling Godwin's Law

I have full sympathy with genuine refugees in fear of their lives and needing assistance.

The Newhaven incident looks like a simple case of illegal people smuggling, presumably from France if they were in the container for just a few hours. It's quite an industry, and I don’t have much patience with it.
Yes it is but that shouldn’t be mutually exclusive to your first point I quoted - we don’t know anything about the 6 people seeking asylum (they don’t get refugee status until they are ’processed’ btw.) - no one can assume at this stage whether they are in fear of their lives in their country of origin and needing assistance (well obviously they need some assistance as they arrived in a locked freezer then taken to hospital but I mean needing refugee status) - which takes time for the authorities to determine.
My only caveat there is that many who arrive illegally are those who can afford to pay smugglers and bribe their way across very long distances. So it's often people who can most afford it rather than those who need it most
Again, no one arrives ‘illegally’ if they are seeking asylum. The 6 hiding in the freezer were not ‘illegal’ because they arrived without papers and didn’t go through border control - ie one can presume they will all be seeking asylum - those crossing the channel in boats and lorries have paid smugglers (who are the criminals in this scenario), often what amounts to their entire life savings to seek asylum in the UK. I think it would be presumptuous to assume they had the money to pay so are less needy of asylum than others. We don’t know anything about them at this stage. But yes, there are millions of displaced people in war torn Countries/or where civil war has made them targets, who do not have the means to pay people-smugglers. It is even more criminal when you realise how little the smugglers do to ensure their physical safety. We need to open up some safe routes as a matter of priority IMO.

But just to reiterate, those arriving in the UK seeking asylum are a very small minority in comparison to the total net immigration. In fact the annual figure is just under the maximum capacity of Old Trafford.

We need to open up some safe routes as a matter of priority IMO.

Weak. I think your use of Godwin's law is tenuous to say the least, given Clampy didn't actually reference Hitler or the Nazis at all. I'm being kind here.

I've met a weirdly large number of people from Darwen. All lovely people.
Some of the comments on this thread puts a whole new spin on the validity of ‘Darwenism’ 🤔

Did you know that the locals of Darwen pronounce it as 'Darren'?

Not a lot of people know that, unless you live around there, or are married to a woman from Accrington.

This has nothing to do with the thread title, but the horse has kind of bolted and is standing in a field in another county.

Your posts are right on point however.

A comparison "involving" Hitler and the Nazis, not "referencing" Hitler and the Nazis. I'd say that a comparison referencing Jewish refugees in WWII certainly involves Hitler and the Nazis, wouldn't you?

Comical little racist.
I'm thoroughly working class by the way. I can't think of any of my mates growing up who fall for that Enoch/Moseley horseshit
As a follow up to my last post I’m still not feeling threatened by immigrants. Maybe @cunning fergus needs to up his game?

Of course they aren’t genuine, f**k me I wasn’t born yesterday. That isn’t remotely the point. The loophole was created by racists demanding immigrants “integrate”. Can you not see the irony?
nowt to do with integration. if they're coming from certain Islamic countries, claim asylum on religious grounds they can't be return as it'll be unsafe for them.

It is matter of interpretation. Mine differs from yours. For instance, the gravamen of Godwin's law is a comparison of Nazis and Hitler, the cause of the Holocaust. The comparison by @The Clamp referenced Jewish refugees (a manifestation of the Holocaust) and WW2 (the war in which it occurred). Sure they are linked, but do you see that they are not the same thing? At the risk of repeating myself, it was you who used the terms Nazis and Hitler, and nobody else. You then used Godwin's Law against @The Clamp. You tried to mock him.

But nobody joined you in your 'laughter' on post #205.

All this on a thread about six desperate individuals who risked their lives, confined in a small space, damaged the motor to save their lives, gassed themselves, and are now hospitalised. They could have died.

Eh?

You don’t get asylum because you’ve BECOME something. You get it because you had good reason to leave in the first place,

how do you prove you're at risk? demostrate your religion through recognised conversion and all good.

if i were seeking asylum i'd go to Germany too, much more supportive. does make one wonder why go to the extra risk of crossing the channel.
Maybe they speak English but not German.

The weird thing is, I've read that locals pronounce it Darren, but none of the people I've met from there actually do.
This annoys me far more than it should do. :lolol:

After a quick google I see one person has been charged after two were arrested ….no update on those taken to hospital…but on a positive note they’ve confirmed no one has died. Facts as I understand them unless anyone has anything to counter that.
Seems to be about the sum of the story so far
