From the BBC gossip page (so it must be true) .....

Barcelona cannot afford to appoint Roberto de Zerbi as their new manager because of the finances involved in securing the Brighton boss. (Matteo Moretto)

This is the way I see it as well. Suck it up Barca. You can't take from us. Now let's see if we can take from you :)

Nothing surprising here tbf, we were always unlikely to hire a manager who is under contract with another club.

Looks like Hansi Flick is our favorite rn.

That said, De Zerbi's agents were in Barcelona today. ;)

But at the same time they are also representing Ronald Araujo so pretty sure they were talking with the club about his future. We reportedly rejected an offer from Bayern in January and want to renew his contract.

I expect Barcelona will go with the cheapest / best option.

Cheapest option. Kind of agree but not totally. Cheapest option would be Rafa Marquez who is already at the club so would only need to give him a small wage raise to be promoted to the first team. But after initially being quite highly rated by the board his stocks have fallen lately imo. Laporta reportedly didn't like some of Rafa's statements after Xavi announced his decision to leave. And Deco's words also suggest we are looking for someone more experienced on a top level. Something I agree with but ofc our options are limited.

Best option? Well, hopefully but not too optimistic. Flick just makes the most sense amongst realistically available managers but is he really the best option? We'll see. Personally would rather take a risk with Thiago Motta who is overperforming (actually competing for CL spots) in Serie A with Bologna. Also ticks the box as a former player.

Also, about the Jijantes/Gerard Romero sources saying RDZ is still a possible target. Romero is a twitch merchant who needs to keep his followers so while I believe he has some sources inside the club often he'll also just make up stuff to stay relevant.

He was considered for years as unreliable (and even meme by some fans) but had great summer of 2022 when we had those famous levers. He was the one who insisted Kounde will sign with Barca when most other sources were convinced he'll go to Chelsea. Was also pretty spot on with both Lewandowski and Raphinha's signings. Since then was hit and miss like most other journalists.

So is it possible we'll sign RDZ? Of course. It's also posssible we'll sign Klopp. But is it likely? My answer would be a clear No. At least for this summer. But in 2025 who knows if De Zerbi is still at Brighton and we'll be looking for another manager (which I wouldn't be surprised).

Thanks. Very informative.

I’m relaxed about any such rumours. RDZ is a great coach, but he hasn’t a hope in hell of success at Barcelona.

Guardiola wouldn’t have a hope in hell at Barcelona, they are absolutely hamstrung by their finances, and instead of accepting their fate and bringing through from their academy until they’re on an even keel, they’re trying to buy their way out of their financial constraints. Their club president seems high on his own supply, entirely lacking in humility or awareness of the club’s situation.

There’s going to be a loud bang there before too long.

Oh, plus RDZ is not 9 points clear at the top of the Premier League, he’s mid-table, doing well with a squad that (when everybody is fit) is pretty strong.

I love RDZ, but he is absolutely not the finished article. He’s very much a work in progress himself.

Roberto de Zerbi's agents have confirmed that it is not impossible that he may run for US President this autumn 😂

Fortunately that is impossible, unless he was born in the USA and moved to Italy later

Surely there's some relative that moved to the USA decades ago? ;))

It is a shame. You went with a good joke but managed to pick one of the few silly job options that it is literally, actually impossible for him to get.

You're right... I blew it 🤦🏼‍♂️

It's a little more complicated than that - you don't HAVE to have been physically born in the US. The requirement is to be a "natural born citizen" - presidential candidate Senator John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone (but it was under US control at the time). However, you DO have to have lived in the US for 14 years.

14 years you say, that’s some feat without being shot

I've lived here for almost 22 years and only been shot twice!*

Are you considering making a bid for the job yourself then?
