Forget what they're named after. I just don't like naming things in this manner in general. It just riles people and creates division where there need not be any.
Just name them the yellow/black/blue line until you run out of colours then go to major place names or logical directional/functional names instead.

I live on the Weaver Line. As it is a tour of riot spots I think some recognition of civil unrest would have been better. Maybe the Baton Line.

People are just going to refer to them as their colours anyway.

It goes beyond that. It becomes glorious self-satire — that thing that we Brits do so jolly well. When I saw this, and checked it wasn’t a social media wind-up, I felt about ten seconds of profound gloom followed by an audible laugh and almost uncontrollable glee. It’s almost worth buying a Daily Telegraph subscription for, to help the mirth continue. It’s f***ing fantastic!

Its not the worst idea to rename them, I imagine people will be angry about it for some reason because Sadiq Khan came up with it or something. I don't actually think the names are THAT helpful, they should have been renamed as the Overground as having all one colour is confusing to some, but I think more geographical based names would have been more helpful. I don't know how people are meant to better navigate the network now its called the 'mildmay line' rather than the 'North London Line'. The colour changes are good however.

That would be more helpful, but it's not like the Underground line names are generally all that descriptive either.
Just wait until the Daily Mail realise that if you draw a line between all the Overground stations it spells out "Free Tampons".

Are they being renamed ? I never knew the overground had names. Obviously you know more about these things than I do though.
I like the names- except the Lioness line. That's a bit strange. It's almost like we are desperate to show the world we won something. But they also won in '66, so there should have been some thinking their too. Maybe a better summary of sporting triumph should be the 'So Nearly Line'
It doesn't affect me either way. But I LOVE it. I need to go to and buy a large bucket of popcorn and put on GBeebies now. I'm going to struggle to get any work done today.

Underground lines have always had stupid names made up of portmanteaus (Bakerloo), random stations that are on more than one line (Piccadilly), and people's literal names (Victoria and Lizzy).
The Overground has gone from around 34 million users in 09/10 to a predicted 248 million users this financial year. It is going to be genuinely helpful to differentiate what are completely different lines.

No they aren't although they are more traditional. Think its a good idea to split them up in some form, as they do have different frequencies/share routes, but I don't think I'll be calling it anything more than their old names.

They don't really have their own names currently, just their technical route names. North London Line, East London Line, West London Line, Gospel Oak to Barking Line, Upminster to Romford Line, Watford DC Lines and Lea Valley Lines.

Agree, the names are very strange, and have little relevance to the people using them. The weavers line should (with all due respect to @cheshunt seagull) be called the Enfield Line or if looking for historical context the Enfield Rifle Line. The trains would then become Bullet trains by default, even if the reality is somewhat different

The Overground definitely is one of the best successes of the last few years on the UK rail network.
