Probably my favourite show of all time. I've got every episode on the virgin hard drive thingy, alongside a video box set and 2 CD box sets, plus all radio episodes on Audio books.
It can never date obviously because of when it's set.

My copy of the missing (now animated) episodes turned up this morning. I always hoped Ian Lavender was happy with his career considering how much it was overshadowed by his first acting job.

Fond memories of watching the show on TV with my grandad, a WW1 veteran also a Home Guard member in WWII . He assured me that the show reflected how it was in the real "Dads Army"

Yes it is. It's a very affectionate and accurate reflection of the Home Guard, and perhaps wartime Britain generally, as has been observed on this thread and confirmed by many people over the years. But what made it work so well was the characters, which blended so beautifully, and were universal. We all recognise a Captain Mainwaring when we see one, or a Sergeant Wilson, or a Fraser, a Walker, a Mr Hodges ... and a Private Pike. Really elegant comedy writing and some great performances all round.

Very true. Not just the episodes people often refer to. A special comedy gently parodying our old social/class system and awkward scenarios eg “Uncle Arthur”.
