Screen legend has sadly died aged 88. Michael was known from Only Fool and Horses and Dr Who but he was amazing in the brilliant 'A Bit of A Do'.

Real Brighton character - I think I ran into him in one of the seafront bars or clubs a few years ago, I was out of my tree but I faintly recall him being quite charming nonetheless

Never saw him in a bar. But saw him once in the Black Chapati at Preston Circus. I remember him mainly for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and that excellent film version of Midsummer Night's Dream from the 60s. In recent years we've lost him, David Warner and Diana Rigg. Just Judi Dench and Helen Mirren left from that dream cast.

A proper character. I played in the same cricket team for a while. He would have been about 60 at the time.
Mike was indeed known for his loopy leg spinners and the odd coarse drinking song. Doubtless he would have paid the round. Generous bloke.
RIP. Sorry to hear of his passing. The phrase 'good innings' is apt as this is probably Mike's highest score. He was even below me in the batting order.

Always remember him sitting in the corner of the Dyke Tavern drinking pints and chuffing on fags.

I'm pretty sure he played Halifax or someone in Cromwell too.

Very much this. Played lots of times against him at Rottingdean. He used to sneak quite a few handy wickets as some young blade would invariably get over confident and try to slog him into the fields. Really nice bloke always up for a chat and cricket mad. The last time I spoke to him I was square leg umpire and on the turn around he was talking about the filming schedule for Emmerdale. Even if you didn't know his name he was one of those faces you knew from a huge varied body of work. Aside from acting he also used to make a lot of money for doing voice overs for TV adverts like St Ivel Gold due to his assertive eloquent tone of voice. Film wise I remembered him from Zulu Dawn.

I never knew he was a man of Sussex, but I liked him in lots of historical epics and remember him voicing Ives Gold advert too. Very distinctive voice and another fine actor has left us.
