Off to the Brighton Philharmonic tomorrow to see Henk De Vlieger's 65 minute condensed version of the Ring Cycle, Wagner's Dream.

As for gigs have got latin American metal merchants Cultura Tres at the Albert in February and have also booked Cattle Decapitation at Chalk in March. On a lighter note will be looking to book Ferris & Sylvester and Wandering Hearts for their respective gigs at the Komedia.

For the summer three (possibly 4) Taylor Swift shows and then Beautiful Days scratching the late summer festival itch.

Missed out on The Smile tickets at Brighton Centre when they first went on sale. Managed to get a resale standing for £70 which is a bit steep but listening to the albums it’s basically Radiohead so convincing myself it was the correct decision.
Peel favourite Eek-A-Mouse is playing on 2nd March at Chalk. Going to try and get back from Fulham away in time for that. Line up looks pretty good.

I can highly recommend this band if you’re into Molchat etc. 17th Feb in Brighton.

Just been to see Kali Malone perform a drone minimalist church organ piece she composed for a site specific performance in a modern church of considerable architectural merit. I’d never heard of her but some friends took me. I do know her partner who accompanied her; he is in Sunn O))).

Not really my thing but always willing to try something and it was quite amazing, very soothing. Very respectful audience.

CASISDEAD at Chalk last night was fun. Rappers at Chalk always struggle and it took a couple of tracks for this to get going but enjoyable after that.

A slight element of menace about the show and a proper mosh pit.

Nice.

Going to watch The Smile, The Vaselines and Yard Act over the next week. Not sure I would have gone to Yard Act based on the second album but got tickets before hearing it. Much prefer the post punk sound of their early releases.

Proper nice evening watching Bill Ryder Jones last night at Chalk. Even got to the front so we didn't have to watch the gig through some wanker's phone screen.

15 songs, 5 man backing band, played hour and a half and all for less than 20 quid. Home by 10:15. Bosh.

Going back for more when he plays the Barbican in October.

Also saw Tricky last week at Camden but the less said about that the better, frankly.

Did anyone see Creeper at Chalk last Saturday? I really like the latest album although not sure on the earlier stuff but we had a family birthday meal so I couldn't go.

Agreed.

Lovely sound too.

I was at the back and am happy to confirm that I only 2/3 people filming on their phones and then only for a song or 2.

Maybe people realise that if not everyone does it it isnt acceptable.

Or it was a more mature audience.

I saw The Smile on Monday at the (unfairly) maligned Brighton Centre. We were stood about 8 metres away from Thom Yorke. It's the second time I've seen them (previous one was at the Roundhouse in Camden) and we also saw their 6Music set on the iPlayer on Saturday. What struck me about Monday's performance was I had a clear (and new) answer to the question: why The Smile instead of Radiohead?
A prior answer was: they're bored of banging out Paranoid Android, followed by Karma Police and Creep every gig, and want to play different material without being tied down to the expectations of sets that audiences hold. I don't think they'll ever play a Radiohead song at a Smile gig. This is still valid, but on Monday, there was ...
... a new answer: Johnny and Thom want to experiment within songs more when they play live. This is another way of saying improvisation and also provides another explanation for Tom S's presence -- in contrast to the 6Music and Roundhouse gigs, they were much more experimental in how they performed their new Smile songs, some of which was planned, but there was the odd obviously impromptu moment (on Thin Thing?) from their reactions. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves too (which you don't always get from Radiohead gigs).

I saw Radiohead at the Brighton Centre in 1997. I now feel very, very old.
