[Albion] Train Drivers Strike - Luton (a)

This is just the start, you wait 'til Starmer and Co start getting leant on by this lot.
Good - can't wait for the leaning.

British workers deserve pay rises. Those who want to lick some bosses' boot can do that if they want. Being a free country means having the freedom to withhold your labour, the first thing to go in any dictatorship anywhere in the world is the right to strike

Yes, I'm absolutely trembling at the thought of teachers, nurses, surgeons, junior doctors, train drivers, rail workers and bin men going on strike under Starmer. At least, today, it's only.....

...never mind. As you were.

Once the taxpayers funds aren’t being diverted into the pockets and business accounts of the wealthy Tory elite and their chums, we’ll see money freed up for pay rises.
and diverted into the pockets of already well paid train drivers . . .

But no one has said otherwise -of course they do. What annoys folk, quite understandably is when groups of workers who know they have industrial clout, use it continually to hike up their already generous pay. Train drivers have a responsible job, which should be adequately rewarded, but the constant resort to strike action to push through one pay demand after another, smacks of unbridled greed.

The huge jump in inflation over the past couple of years has obviously passed you by. Well-organised folks have attempted to protect their living standards, sorry ordinary workers doing that offends you so much? You must be delighted that non-union workers have been screwed over, so have that as a consolation. I'll await with interest for your many posts on here attacking the greed of MPs and their pay rises, or corporate bosses and their huge millions-plus gravy train which is back in full swing after the brief interruption of Covid.

What do you mean by continually to hike up? This run of strikes is all part of one dispute. The fact that the government have deliberately exacerbated the dispute by their refusal to negotiate seems to have eluded you. Same with the junior doctors (although they bent over backwards for the consultants).

The government are using tax payers money to pay the train operating companies to not speak to the drivers.

Where are your posts condemning the PPE contracts and Baroness Mone stealing £230M?

Pal who is an instructor for Thameslink told me training takes 18 months+. You have a ‘driver/instructor’ with you for that whole period apparently. They aren’t recruiting anything like enough - they don’t anticipate people leaving, and with such a long lead time to qualification they are always short of drivers.
Someone I used to work with in FS retrained after redundancy and is now a Train Driver for South Western

Said it was 15-18 months training and absolutely no guarantee you’d pass the various milestones that have to be achieved on the way. As I understand it any major mistakes and you are out like that.

Think pay rises were linked to the milestones as well, he started on around 40k before qualifying for the stating rate of £75k. Works 4 days a week (35 hours) and does very well out of overtime just being on call if needed.

Fair play to him

Ther timetables for Palace game 3rd Feb appear to be updated. I asked Thameslink and its normal service. Southern appear to be running hourly services Brighton to Falmer. As always it'll be a busy crush but probably no worse than usual.

The game is on and a normal Matchday service will run. Final answer, glad we had all that panic…. It’s not an hourly service it’s 4 trains an hour with 2 extra trains if crew are available.

East Midlands Trains will definitely run, Thameslink ones I can give you an answer on Monday.
There is an hourly Thameslink service between St Pancras and Luton calling at Luton Airport Parkway ONLY. Last train departs at 1900. East Midlands run a half hourly service between St Pancras and Corby which calls at Luton, normal hours for that service although I expect it will be very busy.

Does the 'spoons opposite the station allow away fans?
Probably.

A Burnley fan I often meet walking the dog mentioned the Bricklayers Arms as a good spot and generally away friendly. I can't imagine we're considered to carry the level of threat to make it home only tomorrow night.

Cheers. Red Lion hotel is supposed to be ok for away fans too and they're doing cheap deals on food in Jan so think we will try there.

As if no trains isn't bad enough, I've checked out the scheduled road closures and the M25-}M23 junction is closed from 2200 so that usually means a slow crawl down Reigate Hill and A23 to Gatwick🤬
