While there are several knowledgable people on NSC regarding trains to aways, the basics are always the same. Get in early for advanced fairs (and, in general, it's unlikely the specific train check will happen on a train that's absolutely rammed with pissed football fans on their way home, especially if there have been delayed connections) and, if you have a regular group then get a Friends and Family or Two Together railcard (I have the latter with my son at the moment, it's cheaper than me paying full and him paying Young Persons).It’s almost as if you have a railways adviser
The TOCs used to do further discounts on group bookings if you booked really early, not sure if this is the case as, at the moment I'm on the cusp of T1 and T2 and our games often move for telly.
Most football fans know to use split ticket sites. However, the lovely lady at Portslade station has told me that now that offices are being kept open they can match any price you find online, give you other advice and you'll have the tickets in your hand there and then.
If everyone just paid the open return fare you'd have to be Tony Bloom to follow us by train.
I'd like to imagine that Lord Tony knows all the 'hacks', and does still spend hours on the internet going through the split fare sites, to secure the best possible fare.

There are a few now. Even Trainline and National Rail Enquiries SHOULD give you a split option but the in person office will probably beat those. When I get them online in the past I've used Split My Fare https://www.splitmyfare.co.uk/
You might have to show different tickets at different times on the same train.
I wish I'd saved the photo @El Presidente sent us of the number of tickets he needed to get to Liverpool once for work where even the basic fare was something like £400. He had a wallet full!
I remember his post on the subject.
One of my main reasons for, just one entity running our railways.

Living in Uckfield train travel to home or away games is a no no and so I've never realy looked it up. But I've an hour to spare so I've looked up travel from Brighton to Sheffield on the 27th, wow. Basic price (I used Southern to not use split fares) is £125.60. On a split fares site it's £62.87 for the exact same trains.
Uckfield was £110 with 5 changes and an underground trip through London. Think I'll drive.

Couple of queries to a relative newbie to split ticketing.
First, I've got tickets to the Sheffield Utd league game with my son, bought using a Two Together railcard. We've got three separate tickets for the journey up, all good, bit of a pain but I get the concept. The third ticket (Market Harborough to Sheffield leg) has us in different seats from the first two. Pretty sure we're not changing train so will we have to move into those new seats?
Second, we're also doing the cup game with a third person who has a Senior railcard. On all the split tickets sites I looked at I couldn't see how to add more than one railcard to cover all travellers (Trainline used to let me add up top three railcards). I had to book for me and my son, add to the basket, and then do the Senior railcard. Seemed a ballache, especially as we have potentially seven of us travelling on some away days. Am I missing something obvious here?
This is next level stuff, sorry! From memory Split My Fare does only allow one railcard but, TBH, I've only ever added one, our Two Together.
I've never moved seats but often this is because we use the unreserved carriage when on the high speed trains from London so a big group of us can sit together. Worth talking to your local station I think if you can.

In theory yeah. Your reserved seat moves when you get to Market Harborough. That said, they normally - but not always - only reserve the seats for one leg of the journey so you'd be pretty unlucky if someone rocked up and told you to move. The tickets on the seat / in the overhead electronic display should give you a clue.

Nothing to add beyond train travel is an absolute flucking joke.
Age wise I'm target demo for this place, possibly even a bit on the young side (obvs my phenomenal hair helps) and I find it nearly impossible to buy tickets in advance, at a reasonable price.
I'll get quoted £200.
After about X minutes,get that down to £96.47.
Think bargain.
Only to then remember the journey will be about £50 in petrol.
A national disgrace.
