Remember her doing the Sunday night show on radio 1 and recall vividly her playing Towers of Dub by The Orb and Jungle Bill (Weatherall Mix) by Yello. I went out and bought both the next day.
Towers of Dub is an incredible tune and still on loads of my playlists. The original full version includes a telephone skit wind-up by Victor Lewis-Smith that I highly doubt he'd get away with today!

Oh no not Annie! Another old school music loving broadcaster gone. I used to love her Sunday evening show as a kid. I remember hearing her lamenting our loss on the coach radio stuck in traffic at Wembley after losing the play off final to Notts County, and having a little cry at her playing 'Dancing in the Moonlight' in tribute to Phil Lynott the day after he died.

I must admit it brought a tear to my eye when I saw the notification flash up. A significant part of my life when a much younger man, ev3n though I was not based in Brighton.

Not a native. She moved here in 1963 to work on local newspapers.
This is true - She moved back to London in 1998 though - so hadn’t lived in Brighton for past 25 years or so after which we lost touch a bit. My Dad first got to know her when they were working on the Daily Sketch in Fleet Street in London - later they became closer through another very close mutual family friend who was a music radio journalist for Capitol Radio - Annie was a music columnist at the Sketch and Dad was a journalist back in the early 1960s. My Dad died many years ago but Annie’s death has brought back happy memories which I’ve been sharing with Mum today, especially of our circle of friends‘ family Christmas parties and dinner nights which always seemed to descend into music quizzes and karaoke and far, far too much alcohol.

Behind My Eyes
When I heard this news I reached for my 'phone to tell my friend, but she'd already sent me a text. Very sad news.
Rest in peace Annie

Indeed. An Albion fan as those of us who used to listen to her show on Sunday afternoons in the late 70s can testify.

Also used to drink in the HeBe pub in Shoreham.
Yep. Saw her among the crowd at the Notts County playoff final. RIP.

I do not know Towers of Dub, but with a title like that you just KNOW it will be good.

It was!

Mum’s just texted a lovely little snippet which was before my memories - One party hosted by one of the circle of the friends, (presumably in 1964), ‘Rag Doll’ was played ‘over and over’. I asked her why, and she replied that Annie had turned up that night with a boyfriend in tow who was wearing a shaggy afghan coat and she had brought a promo of the soon to be released Frankie Valli single with her. Like those of us who love music, when we ‘discover‘ something we love, it can get obsessively played and this lovely memory was so typical of Annie’s energy and desire to share her love of music 🙄

For the memories …

Love this tribute, left in the Guardian comments...

I'm so sad. Annie was there on Sunday nights in the darkest hell of teenage years. Her passion for music was infectious, and i got to love so much stuff because of her.

When i was in early 20s and used to occasionally DJ on a tiny radio station in Sussex, i called her up at the BBC once. as a fan boy! To my total surprise, she took the call. we chatted for ages, and she said she'd heard me on the radio. We went for beers. Went raving. We ended up co-hosting a radio show for the Brighton festival.

The best thing she left me with, was a quote from Dusty Springfield's manager, Vicki Wickham. When Annie was starting out as broadcaster in the 60s, it was Vicki who encouraged and advised Annie. When Annie asked "how can i ever repay you?", Vicki replied "just pass it on".

Annie has passed this on. Times a million. It's up to all of us now, to pass it on, too.

Goodnight Annie. You were incredible.

Very sad. Met her once at Brighton station after a gig (Meatloaf - Brighton Centre my 18th birthday). She wanted to know all about whether we had enjoyed it, what he'd played. Really nice lady. RIP

I remember her doing a Sunday afternoon show in the mid 70s where she had a feature called Daisy Chain, regarding which I wrote in about - and had my one played - These Foolish Things by Bryan Ferry I think!

Bit of a trailblazer for female DJs - RIP Annie

Adopted Brightonian then :)

Certainly one of us.
She’s a classic case of if you’re not from Brighton, if you’re of the right mindset, Brighton will find you.
