JPVH has earnt the right to remain first choice alongside Dunk……would he have had that chance if Colwill had stayed ..hmmm
He would have been transferred. It was still touch and go whether he was going to sign a new contract even after the failed Colwill bid wasn’t it?

I’d have Levi back at the right price and wages, I liked him

My guess with Colwill. Chelsea will accept offers for him to ease FFP issues, but we won't make one.

Expect Newcastle, West Ham, Villa, Spurs to sniff around, and one of them to eventually stump up around £40m for his services

Colwill’s athletic frame and aura (as the kids on Twitter call it) disguises that he’s actually not very quick. JPVH is quicker I’d say.
You're probably right looking at how he got outpaced last night.

However, you don't necessarily need speed of foot to play in a De Zerbi team. Speed of thought is more important. Hence Dunk and Gross are our most important players, Veltman always looks better than Lamptey and so on.

I wouldn't want to have an entire squad with no pace because then you are totally screwed but I'd imagine it's quite a low weighted variable when it comes to centre backs at Brighton. Decision making, passing and having a left foot will be weighted much higher IMO.

My thoughts:

1. Colwill has been unlucky in that Chilwell's injury, Cucu's loss of form and Chelsea selling Lewis Hall to Newcastle has meant they'd gone from having 3 left-backs to zero. Therefore, he's had to play out of position out of necessity.

2. Malo Gusto at right back has been a disaster, while Reece James is usually injured. Badiashile has been injured, Fofana is a long-term injury, Disasi has been poor, Thiago Silva has no pace, Caicedo has not settled, Fernandex has underperformed so everything around Colwill has been unsettled.

3. Our defence has kept one Prem clean sheet all season. We are leaking silly goals. There are a number of reasons for this but - for me - JPVH has not been anywhere near as solid as Colwill was for us last season.

4. The club was right to have offered big money for Colwill in the summer, but I wonder whether Igor's arrival, JPVH's gradual improvement and Colwill's regression under Poch now means the moment has passed. Like Caicedo, Liverpool would have been a better move for him than returning to Chelsea.

Not sure CB is a position we need to spend money on now. Levi would just get ahead of Webster in the back up stakes as Dunk and JPVH are definitely first choice. If we did sign him I'd welcome him back, but this time round it would seem to be a luxury signing.

Whilst Dunk is currently first choice he is not getting any younger and seems to have picked up a lot of small injuries in last 9 months whereas previously he seemed to be bullet proof. Colwill is someone we know and RDZ likes , not the finished article by any stretch but shouldn't be written off IMO. If RDZ thinks he is the player he wants and fees/wages are not ridiculous then question for me is why not rather than why.

I agree. Other than when our centre halves get isolated wide, usually in a 1 on 1 in a counter attack. Again, JPVH is usually the best at defending these due to his pace and mobility. I think ultimate RDZ ball requires one fast CB.

he would be welcomed back by all, but adds another problem to resolve....

Dunky is better/effective when playing Left side - i.e. when with JPvH or Webster

Dunky is quality, but he then has to play Right side CB with Igor and Colwill and is not so effective
Dunk is right footed and prefers RCB. He’s playing on the left now because Colwil left and he’s more experienced than JPVH there. Luckily for us Dunk is more than capable at LCB and I’m not sure it makes a difference where he plays.

Dunk left sided CB partners include Duffy, Burn and Upson.

Greer (right footed) also played to the left of Dunk at times.

Yer we could probably get similar abroad for 10-15m as well. Overpriced English man.

No way would he be first choice right now. Not without dropping Dunk
I think you’d be surprised. RDZ talks about his loss in the same way he does MacAllister and Caicedo, he loves him. Colwill is a massive talent and RDZ wants a left sided CB hence trying to sign Colwill and Matvienko previously and actually signing Igor.

We all rate different qualities in a player, JPVH has improved massively this season but personally, I would play Colwill ahead of him. That doesn’t mean to say I don’t rate JPVH at all, he’s been excellent and to me is clearly Dunk’s long term successor now but I happen to prefer Colwill.

Plus Colwill is three years younger than Van Hecke, he’s incredibly young for a PL CB where experience and know how counts for so much. If we see how much Van Hecke has improved in the last year, Colwill could be frightening in three years time.

Agreed but as the club is know for forward and succession planning, I think we have Dunk´s replacement in JPVH and probably are looking for a U23/U21 to play alongside him in a couple of years when Lewis might be stepping down.

RDZ has said the opposite.

No but he's enjoying looking at his bank balance more
I don’t think there would be much difference in wages on the deal he signed compared to what we were offering. He hadn’t played for them remember - won the silly money for once with Chelski.

I’ve said all along I think he’ll sign for us one day again. Hope I’m right.

Duffy always played on the right,.

Dunk has played LCB for most of his career, despite it not being his preferred position.
