[Albion] What’s the worst away day in the 92?

Palace - the one away game I won't do regardless of kick off. It has stopped being a football match and is now a military operation.

Port Vale - Last went up there when we won the 2nd Division. Groups of men wandering the streets for no defined reason but I surmised up to no good. Genuinely thought I would never see my car again and the one parked behind me had it's window done.

We haven't played in the bottom tier for 23 years, the third tier for 13 years and the second tier for 7 years. An increasing amount of the fan base simply weren't at going away to matches age when we played a lot of lower league teams.

I didn't mind Bumley, albeit the geriatric locals leaving the car park we used, shaking their tiny fists at us, were a little bemusing. I seem to recall a first game of the season win there, that was followed by a draw and then ten defeats on the bounce, so my recollection of Bumley may be tinged with victory glitter, and we all know that glitter can hide all sorts of unpleasantness.

We had a 'internet flying seagulls' weekend at Port Vale which was fun, with the Albion team getting a guard of honour having won the league, so my memories of Vale Park are not as curdled as they might be. Watto, 1-0, which was also nice.

Not so nice was their choice of post match celebratory music for us.... Glad all over :laugh:

Port vale was pretty grim. At least Stoke stadium is easy enough to get to. Port vale is a pain in the arse end of Stoke. That said it was my first away day with my son so will have a warm place in my heart.

Port Vale isn't so bad for me. Two visits, two wins. The final game in 2003 when we won 1-0 and the FA cup game where we won 1-3 with an extremely rare Obika goal. Mickey Adams was the manager of PV in 2014.

I think the rotten grounds are worse when you lose, such as at Stoke where I have never seen us win, so didn't go last season. It's colder than Oldham imo.

Port Vale, again, is a proper football ground. I missed the promotion game though I was supposed to go. I'd only been back from a long work trip to India a couple of days and had both jet lag and Ghandi's Guts. We went way before that in either late 80s or early 90s and it was great. Found a pub called the Pig and Whistle which was absolutely brilliant, chucked a beach ball around on the open terrace and then plod laid on buses back to Stoke station.

This, however, is exactly what I was after. A day out that feels like you've been fleeced at a tourist attraction rather than going to the football. Great shout.

Agree with Reading. God awful place to get to and god awful stadium.

Followed by Gillingham away between 1997 and 1999.

You don't get wooden seats any more. we had to rip them up in the away end for UEFA regulations, during the Europa Cup season.

Besides, wide wood seats or narrow plastic seats? I know what I'd prefer.

The old open terrace at Plymouth argyle in the 90s was also not great. I seem to recall not even a roof over the gents’ urinal.

I'll second some of them on here, from the old L2/L1 days, and though they're in the Prem now, add Luton to that same list. Total sh•thole of a town, bizarre entrance between people's bathrooms, horrible, horrible fans chanting the names of our hated board at the time, and I recall a particularly grim evening when we lost 3-0 and it was below freezing.

I'd swear there are still wooden seats in parts of the away end, or at least that there were last time we were there.
The only evidence I can find of this is an article referring to bits of wooden seating being thrown around during a match in 2022.

Old Trafford. Faded old stadium with a leaking roof. It's a dump. Traffic is a nightmare. Ground full of tourists with many "home" fans who don't live in or near Manchester.
