[Technology] Hearing aids

I noticed hearing loss in my right ear a few months ago. I've been to two doctors, two hospital EN&T departments, two hearing aid suppliers and had four separate hearing tests done, all of which were consistent; higher frequency hearing loss in both ears but the right ear 10 to15% worse, which is why I first thought it was simply a blocked right ear. The diagnosis is hearing aids, no other solution. Both hearing aid suppliers I have consulted so far have, obviously, proposed top of the range RIC (receiver-in-the-canal) hearing aids with 64 channels, maximum 8 db background noise reduction and bluetooth connectivity to the phone, coming in at a whopping 4,250 euros for the pair. I am currently partway through a 2 weeks trial and in no hurry to rush into a purchase. In fact, I am going to another audiologist and supplier next week whose range tops out at a mere 2,350 euros.

Have the wise people of NSC (even the not so wise) got any information or advice derived from their own experience? I am particularly keen to hear from anyone who is wearing RIC or ITE (in the ear) hearing aids. Also, has anyone bought chinese hearing aids through Amazon in the 50 to 200 pounds price range?

TIA

LEMONADE?

I prefer grape aid myself

BoT . . .I have a few friends who use, I'll ask . . .and a very good friend who's a professor of ear derived subjects. . . We discussed in ear monitors for gigs recently, and the bottom line is, you need to spend to get something good, cheap shit will probably do more harm than good.

IF you can buy good in ear monitors for a grand to £1500 my suggestion is shop around . . . And not necessarily in portugal.

Christ, its awful getting old! it's bad enough paying out for replacement teeth, hair and spectacles...now hearing aids too..Might as well get the coach to Switzerland and save the kids inheritance.

Yeah, I already have artificial lenses in both eyes due to cataracts. Now I'm dealing with hearing loss. I think the booze bill might be on an upward path.

That’s quite a specific requirement. If you don’t mind me asking, why do you want a hearing aid that enables you to hear this particular kind of person? Wouldn’t it be better to go for something that helps you hear from everyone?

Try liposuction it's very good, I had mine done 5 months ago now and sadly I can now hear what she's saying to me from any part of the house, see there are downsides but definitely worth a try and so much better than syringe treatment.

If you mean suction treatment on the ears to ensure they are not blocked, I have had that done in both ears and they are absolutely not blocked by wax or any foreign objects.

Have you tried flushing out the wax? Unfortunately not on NHS any more but there are kits. My pal Bob the social worker was going deaf some years ago. Turns out it was wax. He's a stubborn old git and it has kicked it again. Worth a try. Apologies if my suggestion is exasperatinly naive.

Edit - sorry hadn't read the susequent notes  but they may be of interest to others so post not deleted.

My mother has had hearing aids for years, and has always been told by the NHS audiologists (who are very good at Airedale, Keighley, so not a lot of help to you) that NHS hearing aids (free of charge) are just the same as private aids but a few years older technology. Which makes no noticeable difference because there hasn't been any major leaps forward in the last few years.

Of course, they aren't in-ear.

Not NSCs finest hour this thread is it?

Anyway I've been wearing hearing aids for about the last five years since being diagnosed with early onset age related hearing loss in my early fifties.

I have used Specsavers who have an excellent hearing aid offering and paid about £2200 for my current set which are blue tooth connected and very good.

My mum uses NHS freebie hearing aids which are also very good but a bit more visible and not bluetooth connected to her phone etc.

I would recommend Specsavers strongly but I think the poster above makes a good point about the technology not having moved fast in recent years and that for this reason the NHS offering is perfectly serviceable and obviously massively cheaper.

Do you have the RIC ones with the transmitter in the ear connected by wire to the receiver behind the ear? How many channels, if you know?

In the ear devices have a lot more problems than over the ear devices due to wax etc. Worrying about what people would think I went in the ear for my first hearing aids but wished I’d just gone for over the ear instead.

Are yours the ones that are fully within the ear without a wire-connected receiver behind the ear?

Yes. They are smaller than AirPods but have had various problems with them which people have said is common to in the ear hearing aids.
