Here's an example: Kevin Doyle was playing for Cork City, scoring in European ties and so on. No sign of a call-up, though. In June 2005, he signed for Reading. Oct 2005 - first international call-up. Reading must have done something amazing to him in their pre-season to turn him into an...
Ahhh... good old Brian Kerr. In 2004, Jason Byrne scored 25 goals in 33 league games. Kerr called him up, put him on the bench and brought him on for (literally) the last 30 seconds of the match. Needless to say, Kerr has been immortalised in song down in Tolka Park as a result of this.
Players from the League of Ireland just don't get considered for a call-up, regardless of well they are playing. Sitting on the bench in League One is deemed better. This a long-standing gripe among LOI clubs and supporters.
And I agree with whoever it was who said he's the been the best player...
Not sure if he'd be welcome back but Stephen Ward is not happy at Burnley. Martin O'Neill has said that players not playing regularly will be a consideration when he picks his Euro 2016 squad and Ward told someone here privately that he'd be having a talk to Sean Dyche.
Reviving this thread because I bumped into tronnogull in the airport on my back from Saturday's match. I've set up a Facebook group that people can join which is probably a better way to keep track of each other than threads like this popping up every couple of years:
Irish Seagulls Facebook...
That's probably true. Before he ended up at Brighton, I watched him win a league title with Shelbourne. He had already won 3 leagues with other. He certainly wasn't a bad player.
A bit surprised that Chris Hughton has only been mentioned once - I think - in this thread. Is that because everyone's forgotten about him or because nobody rates him?
I got to 3 games at the Amex last season. Doing it in a day trip is easy if you're not a snob like MYOB :-)
Hoping to go to the Leeds game in Nov and also Sheff Wed away in Feb (my wife's brother lives there and his in-laws are Owls)
While I'm at it, I found a couple of Shoot magazines from...
I also know of a woman whose kid does swimming lessons with my daughter. She's from Brighton but married to an Irish guy and living here. I missed the thread the other day so do we have a running total?
I reckon we'll start to pick up a few more given how we're playing and being in contention...
For anyone that'll be in Dublin on Thursday, it's back to Tolka Park's bar for cheap drink and the big screen.
I'm in London with work on Thursday (last minute thing) and praying that I can make the earlier flight so I get there in time for kick-off. Either way, I've left word with the...
There's no problem. We even allow people to wear football shirts (in our football club bar). It's all veyr relaxed and we'll probably be the only people in at that time on a Sunday.
