A ridiculously busy spell at work, has meant I’ve neglected this responsibility for a good while. In home games since I last found the time to pen anything (United), the Albion have drawn with Fulham (game turned on a missed penalty, great comeback, but ultimately two points dropped), lost to Spurs (showed a good side too much respect, but could have nicked an unlikely point), and beaten West Ham (solid defensive display, Murray clinical).

Coupled with a huge away win at Newcastle last time out, a pretty healthy

“Can we play you every week? Can we plaa-aaay you, every week?” For the smattering of Manchester United fans still left in the ground a minute into added time, hearing that from fans of (#teamslike)Brighton has really got to hurt. Especially for the (corporate) covert Red sat in front of us, who’d proudly shown his phone to his mate at kick off, announcing that ‘this win’ was going to bring home his £600 acca. What a terrible, terrible shame, for him, that it didn’t work out.

What a win. What a performance, from Chris Hughton’s men. ...

    Watford 2-0 Albion

In an uneven, unmemorable game festooned with poor passing and uncertain defending, Albion failed to produce a shot on target in a start to the season that felt ominous rather than promising.

Only the scoreline, rather than the respectability, of last season's initial defeat to Manchester City was repeated, and Albion's two further games in August – a visit from Manchester United and a trip to Liverpool – will surely yield ...

What a night. Premier League status confirmed, with two matches to spare. A great occasion, a tremendous effort, and most of all a thoroughly deserved victory.

Every player worthy of the highest praise.

Little Maty Ryan, less busy than might have been expected, went about his business in the tidiest of fashion, plucking high balls at will - plunging to save when he finally had to.

Bong and Bruno reliable in defence

Back to the Amex, after a dispiriting reverse at Castle Greyskull, for the visit of Tottenham. Which Albion would turn up to tackle Pochetino’s impressive young Spurs side? That which took the game to Leicester for an hour, or that forced to settle for a point after a limp display against Huddersfield a week later?

Spurs’ away form is frightening. Ten wins and just two defeats on their travels, and on a run of sixteen straight

“Get off to bed” they said, “Big day tomorrow. Try to get some sleep”.

Who are they kidding? Sleep? I‘ve not slept for a week. Teeth done, in the bedroom sink with the Albion crest mirror, then stretched out on the bed, under the gaze of the 1982/83 squad, looking down from the wall opposite. Half asleep, half awake, replaying all that brought us to this – to the cusp of eternal glory – to the prospect of triangular corner flags at the Goldstone.

A scrap against Newcastle in the 3rd round – the adventure almost over before it began. A draw secured, then crestfallen at the response that ‘No, we wouldn’t’ be attending the replay – I had no concept of the distances involved. The lads came through it

Saturday night. I've spent two days coughing and wheezing, and shivering and sweating. Not eating, not sleeping. Zombified. "It's SILLY", she says. "Are you up to the (2 hours each way) drive? It'll be freezing. It's on TV. Do you really think it’s a sensible idea?"

Tuesday morning, I'm sat at home typing this, on the second of two days off work ('deep seated bacterial chest infection' apparently) so she might have had a point. But romance and dreams weren't built on 'sensible ideas'. Anyway, the pills seem to be kicking in now – seems like that Fleming chap was onto something. I digress...

Arriving at the game, we're dissecting the Gunners' line-up, and I'm struggling to completely

I opined in conclusion of the midweek Southampton report, that the value of that draw there could only be properly measured, in conjunction with the outcome of this game. Find a way to beat West Ham - four points in a week - everything looks a bit rosier. Lose this one, and things will take on a very grim outlook.

The lead up to the game had seen my bullish optimism (Lanzini, Arnautovic and Carroll out – good time to play the Hammers…?) had proved ...

A freezing night on the shores of the Solent, to kick off the four game spell that will surely come to define the Albion's season. A huge game for both sides - one that neither could afford to lose - Chris Hughton accordingly dispensing with the 3-at-the-back formation that excited against Chelsea but left us wide open at the same time.

Back to a standard back four, with Bong and Schellotto on the flanks. The rest of the first choice side settled - Knockaert the odd

    Happy Frustrating New Year.

Sky will have been delighted with their match selection – a terrific game for ‘the neutral’. We’re not though, are we? Neutral.

Thus it was exciting – exhilarating – yet ultimately unsatisfying. A game, probably more than any of the previous home draws (perhaps Bruno’s ridiculous elbow apart), that we really – really – ought to have won. Cherries fans, in light of hitting the post and seeing a couple of credible penalty shouts waved away, might legitimately feel that way too, mind. But who cares?

After what seems like an absolute age since the last, and delayed a further two days for Sky’s ‘MFN*’, finally, another home game. (*Monday F’ing Night). Marketed by the club as ‘under the lights’ this one, and oh my – the new lights are quite something! Settling down to type this some 14 hours after the game, the gentle parabola of fiery white dots across the roof of the East stand, is still clearly visible every time I blink - burned permanently into my retinas.

Not a match that will live long in the memory of the (one short of equalling the record) crowd at the Amex, in truth, but another hard-earned and precious point on the board. That many are seemingly underwhelmed with a draw against a side finishing consistently in the top ten of this division, is itself a sign of just how well the Albion has settled into Premier League life.

Inherent pessimist that I am, the first mental target I had, was to surpass

Rushing 70 miles East in the rain, after Sunday morning kids’ football, slogging along the A27 in a stress, for a game we could just watch on the sofa in the dry. Why bother? It’s daft isn’t it?

Well, no. It’s bloody brilliant. What a superb performance, and what a terrific result.

One change in the Albion side, from the unfortunate reverse at Bournemouth – ageless skipper Bruno fit to reclaim his spot, for the visit of erstwhile nemesis Newcastle United. The last visit of the Magpies was a dramatic one – a ludicrous slice of fortune turning the game, and seemingly the Championship title race, decisively their way.

Welcome to the Premier League, Brighton and Hove Albion. Three goals, three points, three cheers – the (proper) Albion looking totally comfortable at their new level, controlling a Premier League game like it was a routine home win over QPR or Rotherham.

Tony Pulis’ West Brom are a well-established, well-drilled Premier League outfit, enjoying status we aim for a few years hence. That the Albion more than matched them for most of this contest is hugely reassuring – more so than any dramatic underdog victory snatched against

    Premier League, August 19 2017

Scanners beeped on the turnstile, the last few hundred fans bowled in, a roar immediately surged. Leicester had scored, and this didn’t feel like one of those days when the opener would herald a barnstorming Albion rebuke.

It’s easier to say in hindsight, but within minutes it was clear the team were well off the pace of
