Hi all. Not been on here for ages. Just done a lovely ten miler though was a tad icy in places.

What i want to know is, how come I'm still always too hot in shorts and t-shirt when all the other runners out there have trousers, tights, coat, wooly hat etc.?!

Because some runners feel the cold more than others. And, more specifically, some parts of the body are affected more than others. My fingers are freezing at the moment after a run, even with a pair of gloves on. Hat is a constant too, to try and keep the body warm. But I'm still in shorts because my legs don't cause me any problems at all. Trust me, I would LOVE to still be in t-shirt and shorts, but when I've been running into the wind for a couple of miles it feels like I've got frostbite :eek:

At this time of year there's probably a bit of people wearing new running clobber they got for Christmas, so as not to offend the person who got it for them by not wearing it :shrug:

I have started wearing gloves for the first km or so, but I've that I'm just one giant ball of sweat.

Anyway, much prefer running in the winter for this reason - which is no bad thing as the whole reason I started running was to keep fit in the winter.

Lost discipline today.
Preston Park Magic Mile Club do an end of month virtual mile challenge on facebook currently organised by Isobel Muir (you're a fan club member).
Instead of 2X half miles at 7:10 I went for a side wind assisted mile effort and enjoyed a 6:49 run in my big clumpy trainers and jelly belly.
Only a minute to knock off:eek: Back to 6m in an hour tomorrow.

Hi all

Some advice for my wife please?

She has been diagnosed (virtually) with Plantar fasciitis and been told that this is a result of her frequent running regime. She knows that resting will most likely help fix the issue.

However, in all honestly she loves her running and it is mostly beneficial for her healthy mind as much as anything. She has looked up some advice and found some socks and heal pads which can help. Ultimately I looking for any advice on things she can do to continue running. She currently does 10k 7 days a week and I have said that at the minimum that should be halved.

I have had PF on and off for a few years. I find that the key is actually the calves rather than the foot. Foam rolling your calves and doing calf strengthening exercises is what has worked for me to eliminate it. If you just rest you are not getting rid of the underlying problem.

Might sound a bit pessimistic, but I still think these are going to be a stretch at full capacity. - either way good luck to all involved.

Any ideas if 2022 will move back to usual dates or when that might happen?

I'm in for London (deferred Championship place from 2020's postponement). Have you moved your Boston place to this year Badger?

It's a crazy marathon majors schedule. There's going to be some very diluted elite fields this year, especially if the Tokyo Olympic Marathon goes ahead in early August, although that's looking pretty slim. :down:

Plus Valencia Marathon is fast becoming the "7th major" with the Spanish billionaire offering big appearance fees and going all in on making it an elite stacked marathon. That's in early December.

Afternoon all.

My "comeback" has been stalling over the last couple of weeks with an annoying pain in my right foot and left ankle every time I ran (and sometimes round the house). One 4 mile plod in a week and icing the ankle seems to have done the trick. Managed a slow but not painful plod round a 5k loop last night and planning on going out tomorrow morning for another slow, short plod . Hopefully will be able to ramp back up to 4 runs a week after that, though unlike [MENTION=1320]Notters[/MENTION] this weather absolutely kills my mojo with no race to train for. Personally can't wait for the summer :lol:

I'm in for Boston, although they haven't opened up registration yet. They're going to do the usual application process but with the times for 2 years. I've got a buffer of over 8 minutes so I'm confident I'll get a place. On the plus side, hotels are much cheaper than they were for the original dates!

I've never trained for a marathon in the summer, so that will be a new challenge for me. My usual approach of going too fast on my long runs probably isn't going to cut it when it's baking hot and humid.

It is going to be a crazy period if all these races go ahead. I've already seen a lot of comments from people who have a Chicago place but also qualify for Boston and aren't happy about them being a day apart. I'm sure there will be a few who do both.

Not all of them are going to work in Leeds!

The last summer I trained properly was 2019.

I went out in a vest and shorts. I had a Nike technical head band that stopped sweat getting in my eyes and stinging. I went out reasonably early in the morning. If it was warm when I was finishing I cooled off with a dip in the sea by the lagoon and then jog/walked the last mile home.

Yes, a fan in a stalking sort of way: she used to have a really good blog. My goodness she took her training seriously and was very, almost painfully, self critical. Not seen the blog for a while so I'm pleased to hear she's still running.

Good to see some of the usual suspects there (Gasson and the Ulliotts) and showing early season form. Looks like you were just edged out by the remarkable Nicky Yeates. (She did the same to me at the P.Park Parkrun.) Had you been able to see her I'm sure you'd have 'dipped' on the line. I'm assuming (wrongly?) that you have to run the mile at P Park?

Before covid it was a monthly meet in PP with 3-4 heats based on times. Now it's virtual and anywhere. A mile downhill with a 50 mph tailwind is acceptable. Try it in February.

Nicky Yeates is a battler and I had trouble getting round her on the track a few years back. A woman as competitive as @GNT!

Had a 9m hilly run today taking Bear Road with 3 fag stops (without a cigarette) on the way up. Plan was to miss the east wind on the seafront and then have it push me home for the last 3 miles. All going well.

That's great Badger! Boston will be epic! I'm in the same boat with the switch to summer marathon training but it won't be anywhere like your heat & humidity.

The Boston & Chicago back to back double is a tough ask but some crazy folks will no doubt be giving it a go.

Just broke 200 miles for January. Flight booked for Kenya in September (see signature). But will it ever happen? :shrug:

Wow Jim the For Rangers Ultra sounds epic, if absolutely brutal! Do you know how many are taking part and have you been to Kenya before?

Wishing you all the very best with the training and taking on the challenge out there. What an adventure of a lifetime!

For the last few years I've dreamt of making the pilgrimage to Iten. Maybe one day.

Day 366 of my Runstreak today, so a year of running every day.

I had thought about running my first marathon today - essentially running from home to the West Pier before turning round and coming back, which should be pretty much the exact distance but...

- My dodgy knee has been sore
- I was already up to 244 miles in January (my second highest), with 62 miles in the last week, so I was feeling a bit weary
- I've never run with water or food, although my longest runs tend to be 15-17 miles, and I was unsure if I'd make the full 26 without having something, and I have no easy means of carrying stuff. Having to stop at shops isn't what I want to do, as when I do try 26.2, I want to run the whole thing without a break.

So I decided to have a bit of a blast over 10 miles instead, and in doing so managed to take a bit off my best, running it in 1:08:01, down from 1:10:36. At the start of this runstreak, my 10-mile best was 1:19:39.

So, 2,482 miles over the last year with all runs starting and ending at my front door.

Onto year 2!

Thin line of vaseline just above the eyebrows.....diverts the sweat down the side of your face instead of into your eyes, and stops you looking like John McEnroe :)
