Sorry to upset people but yesterday Gaeton was caught out quite a few times by the ball over the top to the winger. He was not in the correct position got drawn in to the centre. He certainly had some good bits during the game but it was a long way off MOTM.

Sorry to upset you but Bong was clearly tasked with a man to man job on Costa, a la West Ham bloke 2 weeks ago.
He was solely focused on him and only released himself of that job when he could physically point him over to Dunk.

Jose was less attentive with the fella (Doherty (?) ) causing all manner of first half 'discussions' and formation swaps with Ali & Solly.

Sit in the North East corner. Bong going far to central due to him not handing over his player.
Wolves clearly spotted our defence weakness at left back and just told Docherty to stay high and wide.
It is the Defenders responsibility to communicate to the midfielder in front of him which he did not.

Everton will remember Bongs contribution to both their goals at Goodison last season. Walcott can't wait.

Agree with all of that

There was me thinking BG was our left back expert

Good to see someone else who understands how we play. We generally play our back four narrow and expect the wingers to pick up the extra wide men but the full backs can look at fault when the wingers don't track back.

Each to his own but Gaeton has had some lucky breaks in last two games where he has got it seriously wrong.

If he is solely focused on doing one thing and can't recognise and react to a problem out side his 'brief' then you describing someone who is not Pl quality. You need a plan but you also need to be react when that is not working its called spotting the danger.

Well aware that Izquierdo was also at fault with not tracking back enough and communication between them was not good in first 20 or so minutes.

we were at the same game maybe different seating drives the difference in opinion

I thought that he started off very slowly and was exposed as nobody was picking up Doherety but as the game progressed he began to dominate their right hand side to stop them being a threat and they then swapped to attacking Bruno.

This is exactly how I saw it. Bong was never tasked with tracking the wing back. He was exposed when Izquierdo failed to track back. The same happened to a lesser extent with Jahanbakhsh and Bruno.

These nearly goals we keep conceding are proving to be a problem, were it not for the 3 consecutive clean sheets papering over the cracks it's obvious there are some serious issues.

Where are the Albion in the 'nearly conceded' table, we've got to be top?

My view in Bong is that he is just about good enough. Just about. We will need to upgrade him at some point if we want to keep progressing. Starting to think the same about March as well.

Impossible for one FB to mark their wide midfielder and wingback.

we probably are with 25 & 27 shots against us in two games.

As I said each to his own. I think he is a good stopper but not so good at reading the game nor going forward ( I think he was better a couple of years ago on the latter point).

Hughton obvious rates him the best we have and as a stopper he probably is but that does not mean he is as good as people make out.

This is not about some kind of witch hunt its about comment about our football club and how we improve it. There are issues that also need addressing e.g. Murray's replacement and more generally how do we get the ball forward much quicker.

I also think that for a club that has 4 wingers we actually need to improve this area as our wing play is not very good.

agreed but he was often caught out for both in first 20 mins. Maybe not his fault. Jose certainly needed to do more. Problem as I see it is that all the time Jose is back defending he can't attack as effectively as he should.

According to whoscored.com, Bong is the only player in our squad who has played who statistically has zero strengths but does have weaknesses.

Exactly! Both TB and CH are of the 'keep improving' mantra, which means that we need to identify our weakest link and look to make it better. At this moment that is the left back position. Nothing against Bong, hope that he can up his game, if not we get a new one.
