Close of play, Day Four

South Africa 117-4 (38 overs), trailing by 374.

Elgar 72*, Bavuma 16*

A solid day for England with bat and ball, and every chance to wrap it up in the morning/afternoon and take a 2-1 lead in the series.

The consolation is that it is very rare that a batsman who has a good day as Elgar has comes out and does the same the next day. I expect him to go without scoring another 20 runs so a couple of wickets before lunch sets us up well as we get into their tail.

These sorts of repeated collapses when set a big (or in this case huge) run chase are not good for Test Cricket.

This is true, but the wickets yesterday were down to some excellent bowling.

The decleration argument comes up again, due to the point you make above. You can afford to bat a team into mental submission these days because sides cannot bat out 5 sessions withough a hope of winning. You can say Root was right to go on, despite no side chasing over 300 (or whatever it is) at the Oval in a test match.

IMHO Root opted for safety first tactics to ensure they didnt win as despite the showing in the 2nd Innings they have some very talented and capable batsmen.

I also think psychologically the thought of going in to bat 100% knowing that you have no chance of winning (like when you need near 500, rather than say 400 which is still very unlikely but a glimmer of hope remains) leaves you massively on the back foot from the start, hence the regular collapses that occur making the 'safe' declarations look way too conservative.

Looks a good batting day. Could be hard work for the bowlers.
