Should the voting age be raised?

Next you'll be telling me that anyone who is over retirement age shouldn't be able to vote as they're too stupid, xenophobic, racist, naive, ignorant (etc etc) to understand the modern world.

Just for the record, the age of voting isn't the issue. The issue is the system we have that doesn't take account of all peoples' views. The issue is that we don't have mandatory voting in this country. And the issue is that we don't educate people enough about what they're voting for.

In reality, there are a lot more politically knowledgable 18 year olds than you give credit for. I'd argue, there are probably more of them than he over 65 crew whose only interest is their pension and how well the NHS can look after them, and f-the rest of society.

Just tell the teen voters they can only vote between 7- 10am! That should stop about 75% of them! Then just put wall to wall big brother and love island on the TV on polling day and that should stop the rest of them!

There was a huge momentum for the commies on my fb. One woman said she'd voted for the reds based on another blokes rants. You couldn't make it up.

I was gullible at 18 years old if someone promises you the earth, you believe it, you don't understand how they get the earth to you and probably don't care.

This is not meant to be an attack at the youth but you guys have a long time on this planet and in life you will be learning a lot.

Labour 'bought' their votes through clever campaigning (IMO), I mean who doesn't want a near £30k reduction in university fees? Social media bombarded everyone with Labour material every day, and whilst it got a bit tiresome. The bottom line is it was clever and it worked.

It's up to the Tories, to get their heads out of the sand and wake up to this........ They were awful.

They interviewed a girl yesterday who said she doesn't read the newspapers but made her decision based on what she read on social media. She probably voted for the candidate who posted the most you tube clips of a panda falling over.

Whereas actually I find some really good stuff was being shared on places like Facebook by friends and extended networks. Videos from parties as well as campaign material and rhetoric from supporters and detractors.

Although the 'headline of someone getting their info from social media sounds rubbish, the reality could actually not be all that bad.

And again, I read some FAR better stuff via social media than I saw splashed across the gutter press.

Obviously we should only allow Daily Mail readers over the age of 55 to vote. Do you really think that everyone with "more experience" goes out of their way to inform themselves about the issues before they vote? I knew someone (a woman in her thirties) 20plus years ago who changed their mind about how they were going to vote because of the front page of the Sun on election day. Is that any better?

If anything the voting age should be lowered to 16, and I know plenty of young people who are eminently capable of thinking about the issues and making their own minds up, just as I know plenty of older people who wouldn't recognise an informed decision if it slapped them round the face.

Agreed. I think a decent working definition of "thick" is "anyone who didn't vote for the same party as me". After all, if they were smart, they'd make the same decisions as me, wouldn't they?

While on this subject, my cleaner told me yesterday that no matter how hard she'd tried to convince her 30-year old daughter that she shouldn't vote Labour because they were the Party that would tax working class people more in order to give tax breaks to the rich. "I'm sad that I've raised such a stupid child", she said.

How is it possible to get to 50-something and have such a fundamentally incorrect view of the Parties' policies?

Its not a wind up, i have seen so many Uni kids change their mind because they thought we needed change, like i said do they even remember the last labour government and the financial mess that has taken years to clear up

A lot of kids are paranoid because of drugs they have been smoking, voting is a responsible thing, perhaps we could drink and drug test before entering the polling station................................................now there's my joke!!...................Hmmmmmmmmmmm

The real old/young split in this election was that older people still get most of their news from newspapers and TV, while the young find information themselves online. The young were better-informed than the old, and they voted Labour.

Perhaps we should be asking whether the old should have a vote, as they're not going to be around to see the consequences of their actions. I'm joking, of course, but it makes more sense than the post that opened this thread.
