Who did you think was the most exciting signing Albion have made

Vicente's signing was always tempered by the knowledge he was unfit and injured.
For me it has to be Zamora - the first time. Announced on the eve of the season when it looked like the deal wouldn't happen, you knew we'd go up with him in the team.

Turienzo. He was Argentinian for god's sake!

Seriously has to be CMS. Not just for how good we thought he was (and for all the long-term disappointment there were flashes of it in the first few months) but the fact that this was a guy who was being sold for proper money and had Premier League clubs interested, and we got him.

Vicente. Whilst he had an injury record this was a player who had dazzled not too many years previously and once had a bid rejected of 35 million quid. Not sure I'll ever see a more talented player in the stripes.

Kevin McLeod. One of Micky Adams first signings after his return. Pacey, skilful winger. Really thought he'd do the business for us. He didn't.

Bobby Smith probably, although before my time. Closely run by Clough and Taylor and Vicente for above the title signings by little old Brighton.

I would also like to put Lawro in the mix; summer of 1977, we splash out £100k on a 19 year old defender..exciting times.

Surely it's Bobby Smith.

Was a current England International, had won the double with Spurs the previous season (being instrumental in that)

It is the biggest coup in the club's history

Bobby Smith!
England international and Div 1 player joined 4th Division Brighton. Added 10 k to the home gates :)

Allegedly a drunk with a TONNE of gambling debts. Spurs were at their wits end with him and the impact these two factors were having on his game and having done so previously refused to bail him out again.

The Albion SWOOPED at exactly the right time, cleared his debts and gave him a good contract to come and play by the sea so he did.

Those were the days - salty old international SEA DOGS turning out for any team in any division as long as the money was right.

Such a shame kids today don't get to see players of this quality descend the leagues just because they loved playing.

Back to the main topic and from my perspective I genuinely remember being excited by the following players across the different Albion epochs:

Goldstone 87-97:

Clive Walker (once my dad told me who he was and where he'd played before)

Gillingham years:

Rod Thomas - I knew who he was and we'd been crying out for a tricky winger (sorry but John Westcott just didn't cut it...)

Withdean:

Bobby Z - never thought we stood a chance after his strong loan showing

Amex:

Probably CMS as a statement of intent/mixing it with the bigger boys in the playground

Sometimes right, sometimes wrong but ALWAYS certain

I was pretty excited by Mickey Thomas but what a disaster he turned out to be. Zamora's first signing was special because we were already optimistic but getting him days before the season started seemed like the icing on the cake.

This. Almost word for word what I was planning to post.

I remember being so excited, as a kid when we signed Thomas. We were in Div 1, but were on another planet from Liverpool, Villa, Man Utd and Ipswich. So to get a signing from man Utd, a bit of a cult figure no less at Utd, felt like a real coup. I was then gutted by how that panned out, and I was a little "once bitten twice shy" about marquee signings after that. Until we signed BZ that was. He'd be so good for us in that short loan spell, that I was suddenly that excited little kid again when we signed him right before the start of the season.

I remember seeing that we'd signed Thomas. I think it was on a midweek sports programme that it was announced. It was a massive coup for Brighton and was a signing that shocked fans of other clubs too. What a disappointment he was though.

I'm not sure that any of us knew just how good Lawrenson would turn out to be. Vicente apart, he is probably the best player we have ever had so it gives me hope that we might pull off a signing like this again one day soon. Hopefully a young striker this season.

Top three above look about right.

I and many others at the time had never heard of Lawrenson and so couldn't call him our most exciting signing. I could call him our best ever signing, though, by the proverbial country mile.

Pace he was fat and overweight, didnt we sign him from Colchester? He wasnt the worst player in that era though.

Most excited about signing a player rules out those that developed into cult heroes Peter Ward or Bobby Z for example as excited about signing indicates that they arrive with some expectations so for me

The two Peruvian World Cup players Juan Carlos Oblitas and Percy Rojas I remember being so excited they we're coming for trials and I am sure I can remember seeing them play one in particular up front had long sleeves on which he kept pulled down all the time looking very cold sure it was the Greyhound Stadium maybe my imagination anyway neither signed in the end but for a while oh we did dream.

Frank Worthington what an entertaining footballing rockstar he was, worth paying the entrance fee just to see him drop a shoulder swivel and shoot leaving plays transfixed he was a superstar and he wore it well

Sergey Gotsmanov remember us signing this Russian international never herd of him but none the less an exciting signing and in the short time he was with us he was head and shoulders the best player on the pitch week in week out.

Before my time but Bobby Smith must have been very exciting times a current England striker signing for Brighton

The great Vincente the most exciting signing of recent times we saw so little of his magic but what we did see was breath taking.

Will Hoskins, Wayne Bridge, Jimmy Case, Martin Chivers, Francisco Sandaza, Teddy Maybank, Andy Richie, Clive Walker, Graham Barrett, Roland Bergkamp, to name just a few all exciting signings some good some not so but all I remember being excited at the prospect.

Remember being very overwhelmed by the signing of Jason Dodd. Taught me never to get too excited by a signing again.

Sergei Gotsmanov from the Goldsone era.

The return of Glenn Murray more recently because I knew it would be the final piece of the jigsaw.

i remember bobby smith collecting the ball just over the the half way line in one game & the opposing centre half seemed very reluctant to tackle him as he seemed to know that he would be outclassed - great days
