No one is on strike tomorrow. Overtime is voluntary.

Criticise away for the last three days but tomorrow isn't the union's fault.

Tomorrow's disruption is mainly because ASLEF drivers are declining to work overtime. Which is entirely their right. Unless you think people should be forced to work overtime?

Of course not.

But they're not working overtime in order to cause as much disruption to services and travellers as possible. It's not complicated.

As with nearly all of this - yes, yes they are.

They are choosing to cause as much disruption as they can.

Look, the apology could be a long-form version of "We know it's going to mess you around a lot and we're sorry for that, but we are trying to ensure the railway remains a safe way to travel."

The unions don't really seem to do sorry though, do they?

I understand that. But where we disagree is thinking we're owed an apology for industrial action. It's the company's job to provide a service. Relying on people working overtime is not an adequate way to do that.

Maybe not. But as has become clear throughout all of this nearly every operator, if not them all, work in this way. It's not some peculiar SASTA thing.

And the unions are happy to exploit that and mess up the lives of thousands. Rightyo.

It does seem to me that a lot of the Southern network does seem to be run on overtime. I would argue that is poor long term planning by them.

Ultimately it is up to the individual if they want to do overtime or not but I do think sympathy for the Unions is going to start disappearing when the driver's strike next week closes the whole network next week (I am having to get the coach from Worthing to London next week to get to a meeting).

Thought ASLEF had banned their members from working overtime from tomorrow, in the full knowledge that the understaffed company will have no choice other than to cancel even more services ?

Not true, there have been closed shops in EU countries in the 21st century.

Sorry let me re-state that, I meant in the UK not anywhere in the EU

Without wishing to repeat myself, overtime is voluntary and if the Southern network is so reliant on it they should have more drivers.

Yes, we all know that, and Southern have mismanaged things on a colossal scale, but the drivers are not allowed to work any overtime tomorrow.....as instructed by the Union. Or is that not the case ?

So you don't believe the action has been taken in order to cause as much disruption as possible to services?

Maybe they're all just winding down for Christmas. Is that it?

Of course it is being done to make a point but crew shortages aren't a new thing so Southern should have employed more crew.

Since around 2008 it has been an employers market where they have had the upper hand, I think Govia HR has been somewhat stupid in the staff planning on this
