Well that's me sold - just used Uber for the first time from New Steine Hotel ( half way along St James ). Turned up quickly and was the lower end of the estimate. £13.26 when the quote was £13 - £17. Minus the £10 intro fee and I got home for £3.26. It would usually cost me more than £15 to get home from Brighton station ! Bye bye 414141, 204060 and 202020.

And I did it without being raped.

After waiting at falmer for best part of an hour (got off lightly compared to those going east) eventually got a train only to find at Brighton there was nothing that would get me to Shoreham at a sensible hour.

Out came my virgin Uber app.

I popped the pin in terminus road by the station.
I was told a chap called oscar would be there in 3 mins in a Toyota Prius.
I was provided with his Reg number and photo
I watch the cars progress on my iPhone as it came towards us
I driver in suit and tie greeted me by name
We headed to Shoreham beach.
On route inremberered the car was in the high streeet so I amended my final destination on my iPhone.
Driver immediately acknowledged new destination.
6.6 miles and 18 minutes later we have arrived.
No money changes hands
I get an immediate receipt emailed with the cost applied to my registered credit card.
The cost was £17. Around a £10 saving on a taxi, for which there was a large line at the station.

Conclusion: literally amazing service. This is the first death knell for cab companies. I've no doubt they are or will soon be rolling out their software and apps soon. They may even drop their prices to compete. But the games up for them. Uber will work as I can use the same app, not just in Brighton, London and Newcastle but in New York, Miami, Sydney and Berlin.

I can't see 595959 getting me a cab from these places.

Recommended the app to family and freeing, now they and I have sons £10 credits for free rides next time.

Ridiculous really it's taken so long for it to be rolled out to Brighton. Been all people use in London for years, unless you don't know what you're doing or are getting taxi back on expenses. Has its best use for me in Lyon in the summer after NI v Ukraine. Not an easy ground to get away from way out of town, tonnes of Uber's circling, back in town 20 minutes after final whistle.

I had one hell of an Uber driver in Chicago. He picked me up at O'Hare Airport terminal 5 BA. It took almost an hour and a half to get to the Condo off Milwaukee Ave due to heavy traffic on a Thursday at 10:00 p.m. Chicago seems full of traffic congestion at all hours. I didn't even notice how long it was because he kept answering all my questions about Chicago and where everything was located.When we got to the condo I asked if he could take me to a near by market to buy some items so I could stock up the condo. He turned off the Uber app after helping get my baggage into the condo and took me to the market. After shopping for over 20 minutes I thought he would be gone but the driver was still waiting there in his Toyota Camry. He helped me get the market items in his car and then get them into the condo. Then he took me to Wrigleyville and we talked sport the whole way. I did throw him a twenty but I don't think he would have minded not getting paid a tip. After all he had great company. :thumbsup:

I've flipped between liking and not liking uber. I think I've settled on not liking it. I prefer the idea of the cab industry as a proper licensed, organised and recognised profession; uber seems to be eroding all of this.

Used Uber a lot in Mexico City recently. It is unbelievable good. In a city where you have to be really careful how you get around, PLUS horrendous traffic, all our Uber experiences were great. Cars always very clean, tidy, relatively new. Drivers polite, happy to change radio stations to suit passengers' musical taste. Free water (useful in Mexico City) - and - amazingly cheap.....around 40 pesos (two quid) for a half hour trip. And the app itself is excellent. I think the max time we had to wait for a ride was 5 mins, and generally it was 2 or 3 mins - wherever we were in the city.

I also like the idea of the other cab companies being in and around Brighton, as they will provide competition. If they want to compete with Uber they will have to make it as easy to order a cab and probably offer more competitive pricing.

It's the fact that many of the cab companies we are familiar with have been around for decades and have not invested in the technology that Uber have. Uber beat them on price (that can and will change). They been them on service (that will change as the other cab companies embrace technology)

They won't catch Uber though as it's the coverage that Uber offer with is unsurpassed. If the cab companies are going to catch up, they will need to bang their heads together to create a network of sorts. Maybe like estate agents do with Right move, Zoopla etc. All the cab companies in Brighton only operate in this area. They will also benefit due to the number of visitors to Brighton.

Buy my hunch is they have missed the boat

Nowhere near as bad as the taxi ride I had in Bangkok in 1990. Left a club, got driven round and round before finally getting to our hotel. The next morning, got outside our hotel and saw the club across the road :lol:

The journey still only cost £1, which was good value for the laugh.

The point I was trying to make is I prefer the more traditional employment set up of "normal" cabs over this new gig economy set up which uber uses.

Well after last nights fiasco with 202020 cabs I'll definitely be using Uber whenever it's possible. Needed a cab for 5 to North Road and the driver started taking some very strange detours but I thought he might well know a better route via back streets than me. That was until we ended up at the Clock Tower. Once we finally got to North Road I told him that I thought that was a rip off route he'd used. He tried to argue but his English was frankly pathetic. He got given the fare I would have expected to pay not what he was demanding.

Time to go home and wander down to East Street. Mrs W suffers from travel sickness so needs to sit in the front. Well front seats seem to have been banned in 202020 cabs. First six on the rank had them taken out - when asked why some were down right rude. Finally got into cab number seven and some of the other six started having a go at him for taking us DESPITE us having already explained to them why we couldn't use them.

I will credit the final driver with being friendly and knowing his route - the return journey was a fiver less than the incoming journey yet it was longer and later.

202020 really do appear to be a show of shite so the quicker Uber expands the better in my book.

Since Uber launched, I've been checking my phone to see if there are any cars available. Initially I checked two or three times a day but I've no settled for every second day. In all that time, there's not been a single car available (I've just checked now). They need to get more cars in Brighton or it's going to die a death, they can't run a service with a handful of drivers

You seem to have major problems every time that you use a Brighton taxi. In your previous post, you said bye bye 202020 etc and said that you would be using Uber. Yet in this post, you chose to use the terrible 202020 again. That seems strange. Then you met SIX rude cabbies in a row on East Street. I'd have thought that you would have used Uber to get home after telling us how swift, cheap and professional they are. Somebody could be mistaken to think you have it in for Brighton cabs or that you have a reason to big up Uber.

Type into your phone now a request for a FIVE seater Uber taxi .... can you get one ? Now try getting one from 414141 ..... can you get one ? The answer is NO. So I'm forced to use the crap service from 202020. Hence why I want Uber to expand quickly and put 'services' such as 202020 on the spot. Customer service isn't a difficult concept yet some taxi firms take customers for granted. Having to use 202020 is like the poor sods that have to use Southern for work.

ok, I believe you. Faaaaassssands wouldn't. It just seems strange that I get between 1 and 3 cabs each day, Monday to Friday, using Streamline, and I never have a problem and yet you seem to get such poor service every time and then post about it on here. Maybe, if Uber aren't able to meet your requirements, you were a bit to premature with your bye-bye.
