As well as catachresis, these mishearings are also known as Mondegreens. I have a book called that, which is full of the sort of examples quoted in this thread. It's called "Mondegreens, A Book Of Mishearings" It's a fun read, if you like that sort of thing - I do
What about malapropisms?

My worst one up until the age of about 18-19 was I thought it was Pre Madonna instead of prima dona.

I always wondered what she'd done that was so special that all others before her did that made it a a pivotal point in history. I was such a div back then.

This is true, but I am pretty sure the verse is not linking every evil to money specifically.

But I think the most important thing, as was already pointed out, is that it is the LOVE of money - not money itself.

Not sayings but words.

It's Scapegoat not Scrapegoat or Escapegoat (as I heard a chap once say) :lolol:

It's Tenterhooks not Tenderhooks.

People who use "regularly" when they mean "frequently", as in "Rooney regularly scores goals like that. "
No he doesn't!!!!

And using "off" instead of "from". As in "I got it off the internet".
No, you got it from the internet.

Common Sayings People Get Wrong :

Donald Trump won't win.

Still with Americans, how in God's name did the pronunciation of route become rout? Did some complete f**kwit think that route was root as in something attached to a plant. Rout, to them, is now a road, path, somewhere to go or follow, rather than suffering an abject defeat. Have they not heard of the all time rock n' roll classic ROUTE 66?

Regardless of the exact wording of the original quote, this is one of the examples of the language developing and changing. Through common usage, 'Money is the root of all evil' has become a saying in its own right, albeit derived from an earlier, longer, more specific phrase.

May hell freeze over before 'would of' becomes standard, but I think it's fair to say that 'Money is the root of all evil' is now an accepted part of the vernacular.

Hmm. I agree the verse is saying that. But people often leave out 'all kinds' which assigns the love of money to being behind every evil when with 'all kinds' it means lots of different sorts, but crucially not every sort.

'Same difference'- for two things that are exactly the same thing. Therefore, surely, there is no difference ?

Oh, and 'Have a lovely rest of your day'. 'Rest of the day' is delivered as a lazy pseudo-noun that should really be preceded by an article prefix. I hate that expression, such lazy English.

I have a colleague who deals with Pacifics instead of specifics.
May I say the two are oceans apart.

I'll get my coat.

I used it all the time as a youngster. Thankfully corrected now.

Do you remember 'Filmed in Panovision' ? I thought Panovision was a country.

Anythink gets on my nerves more than it probably should.

St. Pancreas and London Houston were two I used to hear when I worked at Brighton Station that annoyed me as well.
