Why doesn't FIFA just shove it.

I doubt it, the poppy appeal to most is for veterans of the world wars. What's changed is the media have got a bigger stranglehold on the weak.

Wifred Owen said it best getting on for 100 years ago.

"Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori."

I wonder what he'd make of all this fuss. Personally, I think it's a time for quiet remembrance, not ostentation. Some elements of British society get a bit 'Dulce et Decorum Est' about all this and run the risk of everyone learning the wrong lesson.

I have made the decision not to wear a poppy but have donated via "Just Giving" so the appeal gets its "Gift Aid". Sick and tired of the tabloid rants on this and pretty much everything else.

Fortunately don't have any ancestors who paid the ultimate sacrifice although Great Grandfather had a very close shave and, if the German soldier (or allegedly one his comrades who was a poor shot) hadn't just caused a minor wound to my Grandfather at end of WW1 I wouldn't be here to type this. He always claimed that he was in the process of winning a VC when it happened but that no one saw him do it!

That's right. What can FIFA do?
Deduct points in the World Cup qualifying group.

Which would be good news for Slovakia, Slovenia and Lithuania.

But very bad news for FIFA's TV contract and World Cup sponsorship deals if England don't qualify.

I think you are wrong there. No evidence that World Cup sponsors or TV audiences get excited at the prospect of watching Jordan Henderson, Luke Shaw or Gary Cahill.
