Corbyn and his like have been trying to take over the party since the 80s. Apart from Attlee's post war government (arguably), the Labour Party has only ever been trusted by the electorate when it has presented itself as a 'safe', centrist party. If the majority of the PLP split to form a centrist party that your traditional labour voter and your middle class conscience voters can identify with, then it will completely marginalise the hard left and the 'Labour' party will become nothing more than a protest movement full of students, unionists and Ernest, which will remain (as it is now) completely unelectable.

This! In spades as we say on NSC.

What is the point of compromising so much you do not stand for anything you believe in anymore just to get a shot at power?

because thats the purpose of political parties, to effect change and implement policy through power. otherwise you're just a protest group.

Lap it up while you can, as the opposition they're not impacting on the running of the country. We'll see what split really means with actual consequences once May starts spelling out what 'Brexit means Brexit' actually means. Bit sad you're pretty much the highest poster on this thread, mainly gloating. Maybe stick to the cricket.

Shall we take it that you prefer the Tory party stitch-up that contravenes their own party rules?

The Corbynistas just don't get it do they?

I really struggle to get how intelligent educated people can actually believe Corbyn could win a General Election?

There will always be the radicals who believe in the utopian society espoused by Marx but these people will never ever be in the majority.

I'm old enough to remember the loony left of the 80s (Derek Hatton anyone?) and the useless Michael Foot which gave the Tories power for 18 years.

I really don't understand......

It is certainly convenient for Theresa May that she didn't have to spend weeks exposing herself to scrutiny and making promises and commitments.

She is very fortunate to have a free hand, but considering the unprecedented task she and the country are facing, I think it is a good thing.

She has the support of the vast majority of the parliamentary party and is very popular with the party membership. She is going to need every ounce of that sort in the coming weeks and months.

It is not a good thing for the country to have a failed opposition at such an important time in our history. Constructive criticism and cross-party support when appropriate are going to be essential to getting these big decisions right.

Six weeks of party organised in fighting, you couldn't make it up. To be fair the Labour party as we know it may not even last that long.

Is there any point in having The Labour Party, honestly. Even if they got in to power tomorrow it wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference. They are not able to build the houses we need, they are not able build the hospitals, schools and other facilities, they can't lower our bills so we have more money in our pockets, all these things are required to make our life better. They can't sort the party out and even worse the mentality that drove millions of voters away like myself still exists. I will never vote for this party again.

The man who is completely unelectable and can't win a vote just wins a vote
You appear to be missing the point, probably deliberately.

Nobody here is saying he's not popular with anyone - clearly he's very popular with a section of the population. They are saying he is not and never will be electable. Sorry if that pisses on your chips.

That said, personally I find it hard to believe Corbyn would be a worse PM than David Cameron. It's just we won't get the chance to find out, because he won't get elected in a month of Sundays.

How did they contravene their own rules? There had already been one ballot.

Their rules state that it is "the duty" of the chairman of the 1922 Committee to find a replacement for any candidate that drops out of the contest between the MPs selecting their candidates, and those candidates being put up for election by party members.

Interesting... and in a hostile environment would possibly leave her open to challenge. But where is this stated? It is not in the Conservative Party constitution 'Schedule 2 Rules for the Election of the Leader'.

But this is exactly why the country is so split now.

So the Labour membership want Corbyn as Leader (an assumption based on the last leadership election). The PLP do not.

Has the thought occurred to the Labour Party that whoever it is that chooses Labour MP's is completely at odds with the Labour Party membership?
