Perhaps more the regurgitation of some panic inducing statement by the head of MI5...........

that doesnt lend it any more weight, just make me question if the head of MI5 understands the internet. of course, i know he does, so have to conclude this is attempt to grab headlines for purposes of raising profile. publicly posting your intents, even using to rally support is no real security threat, when the real intent and threats can be run on private or hidden forums.

Why do Facebook and Twitter use HTTPS? Is there a technical reason for it, or just to try and ensure privacy.

its so that it automatically gets routed through NSA/GCHQ for them to read and store in their big database.
no, really its to ensure you have an authentic view, so no one can hijack the pages. (except from NSA/GCHQ of course). [does Eddie Izzard nod/shake head/nod/shake head routine]

If the UK government banned Twitter and Facebook, they'd have to ban Internet message boards as well. The OP might have to resort to actually going to games!

Bin Laden apparently used a network of trained cats to distribute his message of hate across the country by leaving shits in people's garden.

Ban them I say
The CIA still maintain that he was running his evil organisation from deep in the Bora Bora caves or somewhere with the help of several mobile phones. Ban them I say. Lucky he could get a signal really I couldn't even get one in East Preston today.

You can join the Facebook page 'How to build a bomb and blow up the infidels' if you want. I signed up but they were a pretty humourless lot. They never mention beer or football so f::: em I thought and left.

You're aware there are other ways and means available for people / terrorists to communicate with each other over the internet other than Twitter and Facebook ?

Personally I've never seen a terrorists Facebook page anyway. Would probably make for an interesting read though.

No, they were run on BlackBerry Messenger - encrypted messaging. Encryption is the real challenge to the security services, not Facebook

Well there's a start point...........who has a blackberry now a days ???
Just arrest anyone with a blackberry and weed out the bad uns !!!

We would all undoubtedly be better off without both and the world would certainly be a nicer place, so maybe this is just the reason we need. Just think, people would actually start talking to each other again. Wow!

No idea, mate - was just replying to a post that was suggesting it was bedwetting by the tabloid press (Daily Mail? Prime suspect anyway!) by pointing out that the bedwetting (if bedwetting it was) came direct from he head of MI5.

No, I was out..............

No, I was out..............

hardly bedwetting the man has been in the job for 22years and he has said its at its worse now, he is a quietly spoken man and not prone to panicking.
the report I heard was on the good old BBC and is worth a listen

Sigh.....

I was replying to this -

would you care to explain in what way facebook or twitter affect, let alone undermine our security? or is this just the regurgitation of some panic inducing tabloid page filler with no grounding in reality?

- just pointing out it was a bit more solid and credible than 'just the regurgitation of some panic inducing tabloid page filler with no grounding in reality'.Oh, never mind..........
