NSC Crashing my Laptop

'NSC is not responding due to a Long Running Script' is a message that keeps coming up. I realise that could be anything (and it could be something that is on my computer, not NSC), but if you are able to identify and eliminate it, that would be great.
Well I was getting the exact same message when using IE11 so it's not your computer. It was using 100% of cpu and just froze my laptop each time. I've upgraded to windows 10 in last couple of weeks & now using MS Edge instead of IE and so far so good.

We use ads from four (reputable) networks including Google Adsense.

These ads are served to millions of sites such as NSC every day.

We used to be Adsense-only but we have repeatedly had warnings from Google due to content on NSC so I diversified in order to minimise the risk of losing most of the revenue that keeps the lights on.

We have had instances of bad adverts creeping into the Google network that diverted people to potentially malicious sites. Google weeded them out but that's not to say that others don't creep in from time to time.

It's difficult/impossible for me to block the ads individually not just because I probably never see them myself.

Ads shouldn't impact the performance of the site either but, again, they clearly sometimes do. I can try to do something about this but it will involve some trial and error although, again, if I'm not getting the 'bad' ad(s) in question it can be difficult to diagnose. I'll try though - it's clearly in no one's interest if the site is running badly.
seems to be the E Cig ad that kicks me out on a regular basis

There will be when I make NSC unviewable to those running blockers.

We need ads here to make this viable, that makes sense. Perhaps a subs model for those who this is causing a real problem and want to block ads? I suspect very few takers though. I have problems on imac but bot ipad recently so am using the latter which is better anyway

I noticed this occurring last week on my work laptop. A single NSC tab killed all of my browser session on ie11.

If you do, can you give us fair warning? NSC is now running on my laptop with the velocity of Gerry Fell after a curry, rather than like a greased sticky being withdrawn from Jeremy Clarkson's arse. Y'*******. :lolol::kiss:

I haven't done it yet because I am aware that from time to time, and under some configurations, there have been problems as people have reported on this thread. If I have confidence that ads are not affecting the performance of the site, then it is something I am likely to do since, taken to the extreme, if everyone blocked ads on NSC there would be no NSC.

If people want to block ads then I am not going to take issue with that. I can choose to serve them no content however.

Maybe, maybe not. You'll know soon enough anyway as you'll come to NSC and you'll see nothing at all until you add the site to your blocker whitelist.

I'll add, finally, that I have no intention of ever adding pop-ups, pop-unders or ads that take over the whole page for a period of time. I hate those myself when I visit sites so would not impose them on others.

NSC's model of (what should be) unintrusive banners should be sufficient to fund the site and not cause undue annoyance to those using the site.

Fair enough. Enjoy your week. See you at Rotherham. M

Yep, you have to earn to keep this on the road. No free riders in my view

Darren, apropos the above quote, the issue is crashing, not ads. I for one would pay to subscribe (if that's not a tautology, which it is) if it meant I could enjoy 'the games' without my laptop (which, as I may have mentioned, is ) crashing. Nighty night.

I'm happy to introduce a low-cost (and it would be low-cost) subscription model which included the option to go ad-free. I've mentioned it a few times, but there has been general disapproval of that approach even though I stressed that those who don't pay, and that would be the vast majority of people, would not have NSC any different that it is today.

FFS, I'm in clunk CENTRAL again. This is about to crash my browser again, and I've only gone into 2 threads. This is getting seriously irksome.
