Yeah it was punk / new wave pretty sure a few bands played downstairs in the early days - remember getting off my head a few times when pharmacutrically challenged !

My wife and her troupe used to dance in there ...all above board no funny stuff!!!
Anyone remember when Mr K's had that dance floor put in which made it look like Studio 54 in New York.
BTW for us young pervy 18+ teenagers, what about the clubs that had the fluorescent purple lights that used to make the girlies dresses go see through and you could see their underwear. Marvelous scenes in most cases!!!.

Apologies if it has been mentioned,but there was a little club just down West Street from the Clock Tower almost opposite the top of Dukes Street.
It was tiny,but loads of mirrors gave the illusion that it was much bigger.
Can't remember the name?
Bentleys, then it was Monroes, then The Joint, perhaps a few in between !!

I used to work on the door in the William Tell in the mid 70's and then at the Lighthouse club after that. I wonder how many of you little scroats I threw out.?

Having spent much of the mid 70s down the Hungry Years, my attentions were turned to the Resources Centre, The Alhambra and the Basement, for some jolly punk rock. My contingent included various minorities of different persuasions, complexions and attires, and it was often a little rough on the streets for us, and we kept an eye out... I member getting chased from Portslade Station by 'Teds' one Saturday night . . . hmmm....
Still, I worked for six months in Shades, late 79, early 80, after uni. Marvellous times. Barstewarding didn't half up my boozing, though, thanks to the tips . . .
A colleague in Shades raised an eyebrow one lunchtime when a group of Brighton players popped in and one came up to me at the bar and asked: 'ere chief, can I have some change for the fag machine?'. A young Mark Lawrenson, that was. My colleague made me smile when he said to me 'That was a million pounds that just asked you for change for the fag machine.'. He had great delivery, my colleague, John Gillett. He later became a chum of Harry Enfield, after adopting the stage name Aden Gillett. But I digress.

My memory is awful.Too much alcohol and punches to the head.

How dare you call me a dead body! Lol! The ceiling was a bit low (and solid) for pogoing too enthusiastically, so I recall. After I left town I heard it was burned down by NF types, owing to the lefty peculiar types inside. It was also called the resources centre, which may have clinched the deal on the arson.
Near the bottom of West Street, on the corner with South Street - did anyone go to the club - I believe it was called the New Regent?
But I could well be wrong about the name.

Saw XTC there, and a dreadful Siouxie and the banshees gig where the equiptment failed and Morris did a 20 min drum solo to start, ffs
It was underneath the Alhambra. There was a lad who went there called 'punky Steve' (Montgomery) who unusually for the time had tatood legs. He had a bit of an encounter at a cimema on Western Road with a skinny punk, who stood his ground, during a Jam gig in 77. Great gig. Nutty night. The Inn Place wasn't for me.
It was at The Embassy. A strange gig as the place was only about three-quarters full (and The Jam already had a bit of a name). There was a full-scale barney in the audience, serious enough for the police to be called. I remember The Jam playing There's a Riot Going On as the Old Bill waded in.
You're the first person I've seen on here - or anywhere - mention that gig. It's almost unknown, which is very strange for a major band
Indeed. Home from home. Wrist Action (Tommy et al) played there lots in 77. An old friend of mine was made uncomfortable when the Stranglers did 'feel like a wog', her having a Jamaican mother....great venue. Met my first wife there . . .

In the mid 70s went to the Birds Nest in Gloucester Place during the week and The Top Rank Suite on Saturdays after a crawl around the Lanes. Drank 'weak' Carlsberg Lager or equivalent.
