Advice needed - PC Anti-virus software

I use neither Avast nor MSE. As an ignoramus, can you elaborate and explain to me the fundamental differences between the two respective firewalls that allow such easy hacking compared to the other?

It's also the one that is maintained and monitored by one of the biggest companies on the planet. I'm not saying it doesn't have one of the biggest targets on it but it's not the shoddy bit of kit it once was.

That said, I actually use the same as you, Avast with Malwarebytes, though AVG and Spybot also do admirable jobs...all for free.

I would just stick to Avast and Malwarebytes, no need to spend money on it.

Avast will monitor virus/spyware activities and Malwarebytes will stop the annoying pop ups/adverts (malware).

I do a quick scan once a week with both and a full scan once a month.

So it is just a case of a free download of Avast then, I which case I will do that later do I need then to remove Norton from the laptop.

I think this is pretty much the case. Especially regarding speed. Many people I know simply use Essentials, it is enough for normal usage and once a week run a proper online scan such as Eset or Trend in case anything has been missed since there have been instances where McAfee and Avast missed gunk that Trend spotted.

To continue the analogy, if you're going to go horizontal jogging with a wrong 'un then there's a chance you'll catch something regardless of what protection you're using.

MSE is fine for normal browsing/usage, as long as it's coupled with some common sense (don't click random url's, avoid downloading anything a bit iffy etc.)...would still use Malwarebytes with it though.

Any of the major free AV vendors are fine but check you don't have free version of something provided by one of the online services BT, online banking etc many include free AV. Viruses are not your biggest problem anti malware these days is more important.

The 'Computeractive' magazine did tests recently and the best performing paid for security was 'Kasperky'. The best performing free download was 'Avast'. I have used 'Avast for quite a while and find it very good, especially as it has a 'boot time scan' that I run evry so often and this picks up a lot of hidden rubbish.

Have to agree on the Symantec opinion it's where software goes to die and that's an opinion with close to 2 decades of experience although it still sells in the enterprise space.

Available in Currys PC World etc at £29.99 for up to 10 devices. My concern and I am still not sure whichway to turn is a simple question is it any better after spending the moneythan the free ones. Is there a definitive answer of what covers what or is it just opinion as somebody likes vauxhall as opposed to ford.
