Immigrants are a great way of dealing with the aging population problem, because a decent proportion of them (I don't have the numbers to hand) move back home later in life - so they come here, work (contributing to the economy, paying taxes, etc.), then leave when they get older/retire. It's a major reason that studies show that they have a positive impact on the economy - because they don't become a drag on our public services in later life.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...my-but-noneu-migrants-cost-118bn-9840170.html

Jonathan Portes, the director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, said: “This confirms once again that the increase in immigration to the UK of the past decade, both from Europe and outside, has benefited UK citizens. Ministers and politicians from all sides ought to look at the evidence before seeking to restrict free movement of workers.”

What do people expect? We have the strongest economy in Europe so people are going to look to move hear and be part of that success!

What we have to realise is that there is no point in including the european migrants here in the figures...what we must do is look at migrants from the rest of the world and make sure, like the Aussies do, they are sufficiently qualified to work here.

We must also work out how we are going to take our fair share of these poor unfortunates from the Middle East by our illegal war in Iraq that has destabilised the region, and has led to mass refugees from war torn countries.

Why do we need to exclude European migrants, we have a referendum coming up which would make this a pertinent issue, even if not why should you distinguish between some distant geographical country and recently formed political coalition against others that have not yet been included in the union, its just a fudge.

If you willingly take 'our fair share' of those in the Middle East, there will then be an ongoing tide of similar refugees claiming similar treatment, at some stage you will be seen as a hypocrite because at some stage we could not cope and you would then be saying no to others with just as much pain.

Just saying yes doesnt make you more compassionate, they needs a different approach other than saying come to us.

meanwhile where is he going to magic GP's from and then force them to open their surgeries 7 days a week

I have this morning to make a non-urgent appointment to see a GP at the very good practice we have been registered with for more than 20years.

I couldn't make the cancellation I was offered the week after next, so the next available appointment is 29th June - 5.5 weeks.

I sympathise with the Surgery, though, because I know for a fact that they are trying desperately to recruit, but having no luck. And I don't think it would be an unattractive place to work.

They can fire all the figures they like at us, they can keep going on about how immigration has been of benefit, I have seen no benefits and I have lot less space around me than I used too.
All we get is more supermarkets, more estate agents. Industry is actually worse than it was 15 years ago, which points to what they say, low skilled, low wage jobs.

This of course is merely a duplictious game Cameron is playing. let's work this through:

1: Tories say to improve NHS, GP's open 7 days a week.
2: Not enough GP's around and net intake in medical schools is lower than predicted number of retirements.
3: GP surgeries cannot cope with step 1
4: Tories claim NHS is struggling and requires private firms to step in and save the NHS
5: NHS is privatized.

The Tories are now trying to brush this under the carpet. The headlines are all about illegal immigrants being deported without appeal and their earnings seized and they are being used as scapegoats. Dodgy Dave said he would reduce immigration levels and the reverse has happened. The only way to reducing immigration down to tens of thousands per year is to leave the EU.

They are actually blaming the Lib Dems for this, claiming the Lib Dems held the Tories back

Ill call bullsh*t before anyone else does. You hear the odd person speak Polish, thats all and as long as they pay their taxes like anyone else they can speak however they like. If anything the foreign language you hear in Eastbourne is by the thousands of foreign students who come each Summer (who stick hundreds of thousands of pounds into the local economy of course).

We need immigration, simple as that. I would also be interested to know how many British people have left the UK in the similar period.

You live in Eastbourne, you really can't compare that to where I used to live in Luton so your going to think this way.
We had Africans, Indians, Pakistanis, Polish, Romanians living up my road, by the time I left and that was two years ago now English people where in the minority.

We do indeed migrants but this increase means building a city bigger than Brighton and Hove EVERY year. Controlled imigration from everywhere is required to give the UK a chance to at least provide the infrastructure.

Do we NEED immigrants, I think low levels of sustainable immigration is perhaps good for the soul and has its benefits but we passed that point years ago.

I cannot fathom why we should need to suck out the best people from more vulnerable countries to fill our surgery's, football teams and research centres when we should find a way to train our own people and become self sufficient in all aspects of industry we then suck in the untrained to take unskilled jobs when we have a million not working.

Isn't the answer political though? That actually, allowing immigrants in to fill our highly-skilled jobs is (politically) the easiest and cheapest thing to do? Sorting out 'training' is extremely difficult, while reducing hours/increasing wages of medical workers (doctors, nurses, etc.) at a time when 'austerity' is the order of the day and NHS budgets are tightly controlled would remove a key difference between them and Labour.

Undoubtedly the answer is political, although I do not accept that there are ten of thousands of skilled labour coming here sustaining our very being, there has always been a healthy exchange of skills and ideas, but the immigrant issue left that point years ago we are now generally discussing historically high levels of immigration .

We have been fed that its good for the economy, the NHS would fail without etc etc, but the situation has evolved through poor political decisions and driven by political class petrified of challenging issues relating to ethnicity, nationality or creed.

Each major party has claimed they too wish to decrease levels of immigration, why if it is so beneficial, my point I just dont think it is !!!

I suppose all the people jumping on the bandwagon and saying "another failed election pledge" voted UKIP in the general election?

Otherwise it would make no sense.

Simply unsustainable and do not forget the 400,000 - 900,000 illegal immigrants. Mass uncontrolled immigration is not needed. Whereas, a controlled immigration policy is what works well look at Australia and New Zealand. The f**kwits who say mass immigration is good for the country need their heads examined.

The trouble is, the lefties will tell you that immigration is necessary to look after the ageing population. Again, there is truth in that, but not on the scale and quality that we have seen since 2000. I have no trouble with limited numbers of hard-working, educated immigrants who want to become part of our culture. What we don't want are the uneducated scroungers, illegals, asylum seekers and muslims.

Try making a statement that isn't cheap, ignorant racism and you might have half a point Bushy, as it is your point falls flat on it's face and I hope you continue to be very unhappy going forwards as a result.
